New Direct Injection Diesel for Land Cruiser Colorado

Toyota’s highly acclaimed D-4D direct injection, common rail diesel engine technology is now moving up from the Avensis and Corolla to the rugged Land Cruiser Colorado off-roader.

From 1 February 2001, the Colorado will be available with a completely new, 3.0-litre, four cylinder turbo diesel engine. This new engine, known as the D-4D, boasts more power and torque for fun yet lower fuel consumption and emissions for frugality.

Better still, following last year’s price realignments the Colorado costs less to buy. For example, the GX five door manual at £26,490 undercuts the Land Rover Discovery at £27,115, the Mitsubishi Shogun at £26,815 and the Mercedes ML270 at £27,810.

This new engine allows the Land Cruiser Colorado diesel to out gun most of the opposition with only the Mitsubishi Shogun 3.2 DI-D offering a slightly higher power and torque figure from its 200cc larger engine.

The new D-4D engine has the same capacity as the previous motor (2982cc) but is better in every way. Power is up 30 per cent to 161bhp compared with 123bhp and flexibility is improved thanks to a 16 per cent increase in torque which is now 253 lb.ft (343Nm) at just 1,600rpm compared with 218lb.ft (300Nm) at 2,400rpm for the previous engine.

Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are down. The Colorado D-4D manual returns 30.1mpg on the combined cycle, a 13 per cent improvement over the earlier engine’s 26.2mpg. The increasingly important CO2 emissions have also been cut by over 12 per cent and are now 253g/km compared with 287g/km.

The diesel is available in all three trim levels – FX, GX and VX – with the GX available in both three and five door body styles. Prices start at £23,795 and rise to £31,695.

Toyota will be introducing further models with the D-4D technology in 2001. First will come the Previa and RAV4, followed later in the year by the 1.4-litre Yaris diesel. All will bring Toyota into the diesel market in those sectors for the first time.
