Calling All Toyotas: Entries Open For UK Trophy Competition

18 December 2019

When it comes to a Toyota’s all-round ability, could a 10-year-old Yaris hatchback outperform a brand new GR Supra sports car? Might an ageing Avensis saloon have the measure of a GT86 coupe? On paper, definitely not. But in the Toyota Parallel Pomeroy Trophy, owners of all kinds of Toyotas can put their cars to the test in a fun competition where everyone starts with a genuine chance of success.

Entries are open now for the competition, which will take place on 15 February at the world-famous Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire. Already a fine array of cars has been assembled, from rarities to everyday models, past and present, but Toyota welcomes as many owners as possible to join in this unique event.

Anyone can take part as long as their vehicle is a Toyota, and is road-legal. All participants must hold a valid UK driving licence. There’s no need for any competition experience, and there’s no head-to-head racing. It costs just £30 to sign up and proceeds from the event will be donated to Guide Dogs for the Blind, Toyota GB’s chosen charity.

More information on the event regulations and downloadable entry forms can found at https://www.vscc.co.uk/vsccMedia/26766.pdf.

It’s a sign of just how open the competition is that last year’s winner was driving an iQ – Toyota’s radical small car from 10 years ago.

This kind of giant-killing performance is made possible by the trophy’s ingenious and precise equivalency formula. Every entrant completes the same series of driving tests, but the results are calculated taking factors such as the car’s age and engine size into account.

It’s a system devised by Vintage Sports Car Club (VSCC) for its Pomeroy Trophy, which has taken place annually since 1952 and will be running alongside Toyota’s own, “parallel” event. VSCC judges will oversee the tests, which include a handling course laid out in the shape of the famous Toyota emblem. There will also be the chance to drive the Silverstone circuit in a special parade lap for all competitors.

“Last year’s event proved a hugely popular success, with all kinds of Toyotas in action,” said Scott Brownlee, Toyota GB’s Head of Press and Social. “This year we’re ready to welcome even more owners to join in the fun and celebrate the amazing variety of Toyota models from across the years. There’s no other manufacturer event like it and we’re keen to see as many cars as possible taking part.”
