Toyota Hybrids are Top Choices in the DrivingElectric Awards

12 December 2019

Toyota has enjoyed double success in the DrivingElectric Awards, presented by the UK’s leading consumer news, reviews and advice website for electrified motoring. The all-new, British-built Corolla Touring Sports is the winner in the Best Medium Hybrid Car Category, while the current, fourth generation Prius has been declared the Best Used Hybrid Car.

The results are a further, independent affirmation of Toyota’s leadership in self-charging hybrid-electric technology, established through more than 20 years of innovation and experience since the introduction of the original Prius, the world’s first mass-market hybrid car.

Announcing Corolla Touring Sports’s success, Vicky Parrott, DrivingElectric Associate Editor, said: “The new Corolla is a huge leap forwards. In its Touring Sports estate form, it’s very practical as well as efficient, particularly with the cheaper 1.8-litre powertrain. Plus, it looks absolutely fantastic from the outside, and you get the peace of mind of Toyota’s excellent reliability record.”

Corolla – the 12th generation of the world’s best-selling car name-plate – has proved an instant success since its introduction in March 2019. It has pioneered Toyota’s new dual hybrid strategy, offering customers the choice of two different hybrid powertrains, both benefiting from the latest technology advances for efficiency and performance. The 1.8-litre version has an output of 120bhp/90kW and returns official CO2 emissions from just 76g/km (NEDC correlated; 103g/km WLTP) with fuel economy from 55.42 to 62.77mpg (WLTP, Touring Sports). The 2.0-litre option raises the power to 181bhp/132kW, enabling acceleration in the Touring Sports from rest to 62mph in 8.1 seconds. In spite of the performance hike, efficiency remains strong with 89/119g/km emissions (NEDC correlated/WLTP) and 50.45 to 54.23mpg (WLTP).

Corolla’s use of Toyota’s new global GA-C platform secures excellent handling performance with a balanced chassis and low centre of gravity; it also gave designers freedom to give the car – Hatchback, Touring Sports and Saloon versions alike – more powerful and individual styling. Exclusive European production of the victorious Touring Sports and the Hatchback is at Toyota Manufacturing UK’s Burnaston plant in Derbyshire, while hybrid engines are sourced from the company’s factory in Deeside, North Wales.

Toyota’s mastery of hybrid technology can be tracked across the four generations of Prius, with significant advances in efficiency and performance being delivered with each successive model. And with millions of worldwide sales and billions of miles driven, Prius has proved beyond doubt the long-lasting quality and reliability of its powertrains – prime considerations for anyone looking for a pre-owned hybrid car they can trust.

“Prius has improved with every generation,” said Vicky Parrott. “Great economy, brilliant reliability and wide range to choose from make this car a very sound second-hand choice.”
