RECAP: a digest of recent Toyota news

16 May 2014

Toyota’s British-built Auris range has undergone some changes for 2014, led by the introduction of a new Icon Plus grade for both the hatchback and Touring Sports wagon. This has extended the choice of hybrid models to three in each body style, reflecting its status as the most popular powertrain in the line-up – UK sales equal those of the diesel and petrol versions combined.

Driving hybrids promotes a calmer, happier feeling when dealing with the worst of city traffic, according to a study that’s part of a new Europe-wide Toyota campaign. Falling in Love with Driving Again shows how a smooth, refined driving experience is another valuable dimension of Toyota’s low emissions hybrid technology.

Combatting waste and making the most efficient use possible of natural resources are all part of Toyota’s environmental mission. Two clever initiatives have been in the spotlight: recycling of sludge residue from the water cleaning process at Toyota’s Burnaston plant as a raw material for cement manufacturing, and the use of a zero-emissions hydrogen fuel cell to help power the company’s California HQ.

Toyota Racing have maintained a 100 per cent winning record in this year’s FIA World Endurance Championship, with victory at Spa. Next stop: Le Mans, the world’s most famous 24-hour race.

The British weather has been brightening up this week, turning more motorists’ thoughts to the great outdoors. Toyota is providing more encouragement to get away to the great outdoors with seasonal offers on its extensive range of roof racks, roof boxes and other practical accessories.

Did you know?

Toyota sold 844,000 vehicles in Europe out of a total of more than nine million worldwide in the financial year to 31 March. This and more facts and figures are contained in the new Toyota Motor Corporation financial results. Akio Toyoda, TMC President, took the opportunity of the results’ publication to reaffirm the company’s plans to establish a new Toyota Mobility Foundation to help address mobility challenges worldwide.

Remember when?

The last London Motor Show of the 20th century was held at Earls Court in 1999 and it featured an impressive Toyota line-up that included new Celica and MR2 sports cars and the showroom ready first-generation Prius and the latest versions of the recently launched Yaris and Yaris Verso. Prius and Yaris are still with us, two generations further down the line, while Yaris Verso still enjoys a loyal following among owners who rated it one of the most reliable and useful cars of its kind.
