Toyota Previews New Models for 2022

22 December 2021

Toyota is ready for a busy year of new model launches in 2022, with a powerful mix of cars to delight enthusiasts, capture the potential of new, electrified technologies and create a sense of adventure – whether you’re driving city streets or heading for the great outdoors.

The bZ4X may be Toyota’s first purpose-designed all-electric car, but it’s true to the company’s great heritage of SUV engineering in being an authentic off-roader that promises class-leading performance from its new X-MODE all-wheel drive system.

Hot on the heels of bZ4X’s world and European premieres, the UK range and on-the-road pricing have just been announced; there will be more news about the purchase programme for this pivotal new model early in the New Year.

In the spring, Aygo X will reach the road. It’s a completely new car and a new concept for Toyota – a small, urban SUV. Keeping loyal to the A-segment where previous Aygo generations have been best-sellers, Toyota has created a small car with big-attitude styling and top-quality equipment specifications, while maintaining its reputation for being affordable to buy and to run. Pre-sales are under way now and the opening of online sales will be announced soon.

Toyota has a proud record for building pure, driver-focused sports cars and it is staying true to that reputation with the new GR86, a classic front-engine/rear-wheel drive coupe that is a successor to the globally praised GT86. Presented as “an analogue car for the digital age,” it is the new entry point to Toyota’s global GR model, joining GR Yaris and GR Supra in benefiting from engineering input direct from Gazoo Racing.

GR86 has larger, 2.4-litre “boxer” engine that delivers more power and torque – maximum output is 231bhp and peak torque is 250Nm. Retuned transmissions, a much stiffer body and a lower centre of gravity help translate this extra performance into a highly rewarding drive. The new model is due in the UK in the spring, but production for Europe will be limited to just two years – “when it’s gone, it’s gone.”

There’s a new dimension for RAV4, Toyota’s mid-size hybrid electric SUV. The new RAV4 Adventure stands out from the mainstream range with more powerful exterior styling that expresses its off-roader credentials, with wider wheel arches, new 19-inch wheels and a redesigned front end. It’s also equipped as standard with Toyota’s electric intelligent all-wheel drive – AWD-i. It’s due for introduction during the first quarter of 2022; further details will be announced in the New Year.

Looking further ahead, Toyota will complete its SUV line-up in late 2022 with Corolla Cross. Revealed at the company’s recent Kenshiki forum, this all-new model will join the Corolla Hatchback, Touring Sports and Saloon. Full details will be released later in the year, but this will be the first model to feature the fifth generation of Toyota’s self-charging full hybrid electric system and will be offered with both front-wheel and intelligent all-wheel drive.

The Corolla family will also grow in another new direction with the introduction of Corolla Commercial, the UK market’s first hybrid electric van. Based on the Corolla Touring Sports, this addition to the Toyota Professional range of light commercial vehicles will be on the road in summer 2022; pricing and specification will be announced in the coming weeks.
