Technical Innovation Accolade For The Toyota Prius In Fleet World Honours

8 June 2000

The Toyota Prius, the world’s first mass-production hybrid car, has received yet another accolade, this time for technical innovation in the Fleet World Honours.

The Prius, a revolutionary petrol/electric hybrid-powered car, is a breakthrough in practical, low emissions automotive technology. Prius can run on either its highly efficient 1.5-litre VVT-i petrol engine, its electric motor, or a combination of both.

The Prius was commended in the Fleet World Honours for its ultra low emissions and fuel consumption figures and is predicted to be popular with fleet operators and company car drivers.

A four-door, five-seater saloon that drives like a conventional car, Prius produces carbon dioxide emissions of only 120g/km, exceeding the European Union Cleaner Emissions Regulations for 2005. In a recent trial Prius achieved a fuel consumption of just 85mpg in combined driving conditions.

“The Fleet World Honours judges chose the Toyota Prius for the Technical Innovation Award as it is a true five-seater that can slot easily into any fleet choice list from day one,” commented Ross Durkin of Fleet World.

Mark Hall, General Manager of Toyota Fleet, echoed Fleet World’s comments describing Prius as an attractive proposition for many fleets, especially given the move to CO2 based vehicle excise duty, and company car taxation.

“Prius might sound like some “Tomorrow’s World” concept car, but it is far from it. In Japan over 35,000 have already been sold and we are being deluged with customer enquiries ahead of the UK launch in October,” Mark Hall added.
