SHORT STORY

November 2001 saw the launch of an all-new commercial vehicle for the UK market -the Toyota Dyna 300/350 – also on sale in Europe. A version of the popular light commercial Dyna has previously been on sale in parts of Europe, Japan and overseas. The new D-4D engine is uniquely developed for Europe.

The new vehicle retains the practical and versatile cab-forward design of the existing model but is easier to use, more pleasurable to drive, quieter, more fuel efficient and more comfortable.

At the same time, the all-new Dyna 300/350 range boasts a number of important practical benefits over the range it replaces in Europe. This includes more power and better fuel consumption from common rail diesel engines; extended oil maintenance and service intervals; increased load capacity and a reduced cargo deck height.

MODEL LINE UP FOR 2002

The all new Dyna 300 made its UK debut on 5th November 2001 with the 350 models following in January 2002. The Dyna is a chassis cab design that has been on sale in Japan, General Countries and Europe since the 1970s. The latest offering provides the benefit of a new cab and all new D-4D direct injection 16v common rail diesel engine. The first model to be launched is the Dyna 300 dropside.

The model line up is named to reflect the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of the Dyna models 300 and 350 (the GVW is 3,000kg and 3,500kg respectively).

The 2002 model range comprises a choice of the all-new 2.5-litre direct injection common rail D-4D diesel engines with either 88bhp or 102bhp. The range starts with the Dyna 300 dropside equipped with 2.5-litre D-4D diesel engine with 88bhp in five-speed manual. The Dyna 350 is available with 2.5-litre D-4D diesel engine with 102bhp also in five-speed manual in either medium or long wheelbase.

The 350 model will be available with approved Toyota body builders in either dropside, box van or tipper body style with three-year warranty. Further body styles will be available over the next 12 months. Currently under review will be a refridgerated box body, a single car transporter and municipal utility vehicles.

Pricing for the Dyna 2002 model range

Dyna 300 has a 6.5 per cent specification price advantage over key competitors in its segment. Ford Transit Chassis Cab 2.0 Di 300 100bhp is priced at £12,800 excluding VAT, Nissan Cabstar E L 90 2.7 TD £12,725, and VW Transporter CC 1200 Tdi 88bhp £12,870.

None of the above key competitors has standard ABS, central door locking or power windows, neither the Nissan or the VW offer an alarm, and more significantly, only Nissan offers a standard dropside body at this price level.

In comparison, Dyna specification has as standard ABS, driver’s airbag, remote control door locking/alarm and electric front windows.

Pricing for the Dyna 350 models is also very competitive to enable Toyota to compete in the largest CV market area between 3,000kg and 3,500kg Gross Vehicle Weight.

The Dyna has been priced very competitively in its sector against key benchmark models:

MODERN, SPACIOUS CAB

The distinctive cab-forward design offers a number of practical and operational advantages ranging from increased load carrying length to easier access to the engine. Cab forward light trucks offer a longer load length for the same overall length than their ‘semi-bonnet’ design rivals.

The high forward position of the cab ensures better driver visibility and improves passive safety, especially in city traffic or limited space operating conditions. At the same time, the forward placement of the cab means better weight distribution over the axles when the vehicle is fully laden.

A major feature of the new Dyna is its huge glass area which gives the cabin a light and airy feel but also improves visibility, safety and ease of operation.

In double cab versions the rear doors open wide and the rear side window is larger and taller than the previous generation model. It now extends down to the beltline for an excellent rear view. Modern, two-lamp headlights complete the overall dynamic look. The lamps feature halogen bulbs and a headlamp levelling device is optional.

DRIVER AND PASSENGER COMFORT

Inside the cab, driver and passengers will find new Dyna has placed great emphasis on features, comfort, convenience and ease of operation. The cab itself is very spacious (1530mm interior width, 1285mm interior height; 940mm interior length) allowing three adults to sit with ample room.

There is ample legroom too, offering comfort and easy entry and exit. The double cab (if specified) offers a 1470mm interior width – again ample space for three adults.

Considerable attention was paid to seat comfort and support to minimise fatigue on long trips and during the working day. The driver’s seat slides 180mm and reclines for a comfortable driving position. Lumbar support is standard.

The fully adjustable steering column tilts to ensure all drivers find their most comfortable setting. Speed sensitive power steering means a light touch while working in confined areas or in traffic with more positive feel on the open road.

For passengers, headrests are standard equipment – even in the centre. Rear seat cushions on double cab models are wider and deeper than on the previous model.

All essential controls and switches have been ergonomically placed on the dashboard centre cluster for ease of operation. The main instrumentation has been designed for maximum clarity and the meters use backlit illumination, which makes them particularly legible at night.

Anti-noise and vibration measures include asphalt sheets on the floor; strategically placed reinforcements; sealing material in the pillars and rigid bulkheads. Additional storage capacity, including practical items such as map pockets and a ticket holder, is available throughout the cab.

ADVANCED D-4D DIESEL ENGINES

The new Dyna 300/350 is offered with a choice of new advanced Toyota D-4D direct injection, turbocharged, common rail diesel engines depending on the payload. The new engines will provide users with more power, more performance and reduced fuel consumption.

At the same time the adoption of common rail diesel engines, with an advanced engine oil maintenance management system, allows the introduction of extended oil maintenance/health check intervals of 10,000miles with major service intervals at 20,000miles in line with Toyota VVT-i passenger cars. The combination of reduced fuel consumption and extended service intervals will result in significantly reduced cost of ownership.

The low output D-4D common rail, turbocharged unit with intercooler for Gross Vehicle Weight 3,000kg offers 88bhp at 3,800rpm and a flat 192Nm (139lb ft) of torque from 1,200rpm to 3,000rpm.

The more powerful version, also turbocharged and intercooled for Gross Vehicle Weight 3,500kg offers 102bhp at 3,600rpm and 260Nm (188lb ft) of torque available from 1,400rpm to 2,600rpm.

Both these engines offer outstanding economy and reliability in typical, tough working environments. At the same time they offer the other benefits of Toyota’s advanced, common rail technology – low noise, instant starting and low emissions levels. Both engines comply with European Step III emissions legislation.

REDUCED COST OF OWNERSHIP

The new diesel engines are equipped with a sophisticated oil maintenance management system, which improves the engine’s durability.

The engine control unit monitors the oil contaminant level (dependent on driving conditions) and the distance travelled on the digital trip meter. If either of these reaches the specified level, the engine oil change reminder light illuminates and can only be reset after an oil change. The real advantage of this system is that it can warn the driver when the oil’s properties have reached a certain deterioration level, ensuring a longer life for the engine if the oil change is done soon after.

The adoption of the new D-4D diesel engines allows for extended service intervals 10,000mile health and safety check and 20,000mile service intervals.

As a result of all these improvements the new Dyna’s cost of ownership is visibly reduced in comparison with the previous model generation.

CHOICE OF TRANSMISSION

Two five-speed manual transmissions are available, with ratios set to suit the engine output. A light, positive shift ensures all gears are easy to select.

Clutch operation has also been lightened and the drivetrain has been re-engineered for reduced operational noise while retaining the durability required for commercial use.

HEAVY DUTY CHASSIS & FRAME

Double wishbone front suspension with upper torsion bar springs offers a superior balance of handling, stability and ride comfort. The front axle capacity has been increased to 1,800kg to boost payload capacity.

At the rear, wider leaf-spring assemblies on double rear wheel models result in better handling and stability. Leaf springs are now 70mm wide, raising the rear axle capacity to 2,550kg on double rear wheel models.

For the first time in this class, a divided frame is used – one under the cargo deck and one under the cabin. This allows the frame under the cargo deck to be made flatter so it can be more easily adapted to different load-carrying configurations.

The frame itself is U-shaped in cross section, which makes it more rigid and the frame assembly is 800mm wide. To allow for various configurations, cross members do not protrude above the side members.

FULL SAFETY FEATURES

The cabin structure was designed using sophisticated computer simulations to help protect the occupants from impact. The front doors have side impact beams to absorb impact energy.

A driver’s SRS airbag and seatbelts with pretensioners are standard to help reduce the risk of chest and upper body injury. The pretensioners draw the occupant back into the seat in the early stages of impact.

Standard equipment includes full three-point ELR seatbelts for driver and opposite side passengers with two-point belts for centre passengers. The driver’s seatbelt has an adjustable shoulder strap.

SUPERIOR BRAKING PERFORMANCE

Highly efficient brakes help ensure stable and consistent braking performance, match by superior pedal feel.

Disc brakes are fitted at the front and rear drum brakes are equipped LSPV & BV (Load-Sensing Proportioning Valve and Bypass Valve). This system can change the braking characteristics according to the payload. The Bypass Valve also works as a safety device, providing that, in case of front brake malfunction, there is always brake fluid pressure going to the rear brakes. An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is available as standard equipment on both Dyna 300 and Dyna 350.
