OVER HERE! – A REAL AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY

The all-new Toyota Camry made its European debut at this year’ s Frankfurt Motor Show and, as of 1 November, is on sale in the UK. Building on the strengths of the outgoing model, the new Camry sets new standards in the European upper-medium executive segment as a flagship saloon for the Toyota brand.

The previous model has been the best selling saloon car in the USA for four consecutive years with over five million cars sold there in total since the car was first launched in 1983. Although selling in much smaller numbers in the UK, Camry has been a ‘sleeper hit’ with many executive class buyers who value refinement and quality.

Toyota’s flagship saloon, the new Camry is a completely new design that builds on the model’s long standing attributes of class leading comfort and refinement. The new car also offers buyers a carefully engineered balance of ride, comfort and performance – all at a price that defines good value.

New Camry is striking to look at. It is also spacious and comfortable and will offer buyers excellent driving dynamics thanks to a carefully engineered balance of ride, comfort and performance. It builds on the strengths of the outgoing model by offering advanced styling, innovative powertrain technology, a new chassis and, remarkably, even better quality than before.

New Camry drivers and passengers will enjoy its improved dynamics, uncompromised comfort, class-leading interior quality, further improved rear seat space and equipment levels which are second to none. Low NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) levels and a world-class safety system complete the package.

British Camry drivers benefit from a level of investment in the car European rivals simply cannot match. This is not only due to Toyota’s remarkable engineering ability, but the fact
that, with millions of sales expected in the USA, the Camry can justify a bigger R&D budget than comparable models from European volume brands.

The result is an executive saloon that exceeds customer expectations in this demanding segment. High quality materials are used throughout and build quality improves on Toyota’s already high standards.

The Camry also comes with a whole host of Toyota advanced technology and luxury equipment – such as automatic headlamp control; rain sensitive windscreen wipers; fully automatic air conditioning; full leather interior on CDX models and, on 3.0-litre V6 models, an optional DVD-based navigation system that stores over 13 times the amount of mapping information as a conventional CD based system. DVD is also faster and has additional features.

BOLD NEW LOOK WITH EXTRA INTERIOR SPACE

New Camry manages to appear sleek with an aggressive frontal design, steeply raked windscreen and strong wedge shape. The rear pillar is angled to create a coupe look that disguises the huge boot space.

Not surprisingly, the aerodynamic shape of the new Toyota Camry results in reduced wind resistance with a class-leading coefficient of drag of Cd 0.28. Not only does this help boost performance but it also saves fuel, reduces exhaust emissions, and reduces wind noise.

Because the Camry is all-new, Toyota engineers were able to develop a completely fresh package, creating extra interior space within a relatively compact and dynamic exterior shape.

Thanks to the longer wheelbase, the distance between the front and rear seats is increased to 860mm, and the newly developed package results in excellent head and shoulder room, adding to the overall feeling of spaciousness (interior volume: 3.35cu m). The interior is 1870mm long and 1515mm wide, with class-leading leg and headroom for both front and rear passengers.

The huge boot space (587 litres) is complemented by numerous storage spaces throughout the car, including a roof case for glasses; glovebox; two-stage rear console box; cupholders; door and seat-back pockets.

SMOOTH, POWERFUL DRIVETRAINS

Toyota has developed two new engines for the new Camry which match its refinement and outstanding driving dynamics.

The two new engines offer Camry customers outstanding performance and smooth acceleration. Low noise levels, low fuel consumption and excellent throttle response are key attributes of both power units, which have been tuned to give maximum driver enjoyment and comfort.

The 2.4-litre engine benefits from Toyota’s advanced Variable Valve Timing-intelligent
(VVT-i) technology which boosts torque output in low to mid engine speeds resulting in an easier, more relaxed driving style and improved fuel consumption.

Both engines comply with European Step III emissions levels. Their efficient design and excellent fuel consumption reduces potential environmental damage and harmful emissions to minimum levels.

Powerful 2.4-litre

The new 2.4-litre, four cylinder offers sporty characteristics to Camry drivers wanting to get maximum driving enjoyment from their new executive car.

Class leading acceleration and a maximum speed (where permitted) of 130mph are attributes of the twin-cam, multi-valve unit. The Camry 2.4 with manual transmission will reach 0-62mph from rest in just 9.4 seconds – well ahead of less nimble rivals.

The VVT-i engine delivers 150bhp of power at 5,600rpm and has maximum torque of 218Nm at 3,800-4,200rpm. Thanks to the long, flat torque curve developed by VVT-i, the mid-range acceleration is outstanding and the 2.4-litre Camry is a pleasure to drive on the open road.

The broad torque band contributes to the excellent fuel economy – again class-leading in the executive car sector. The Camry 2.4 with manual transmission has excellent fuel consumption of 32.8mpg on the combined European cycle with carbon dioxide emissions of 206g/km. The Camry 2.4 is also available with an optional, electronically controlled, automatic transmission. Acceleration from rest to 62mph with the automatic gearbox takes 10.5 seconds.

Smooth, 3.0-litre V6

Camry drivers looking for maximum comfort and performance will be able to opt for the
3.0-litre, V6 engine which gives outstandingly smooth acceleration and low noise levels. The 2,995cc, V6 engine develops 184bhp at 5,300rpm and has maximum torque of 273Nm at 4,300rpm.

The 3.0-litre car retains the sporty feel and excellent driving dynamics of its smaller-engined relation. Maximum speed (where permitted) is 140mph and acceleration to 62mph from rest takes 9.1 seconds. Fuel consumption on the combined European cycle is 25.7mpg and CO2 emissions are 263g/km.

FULL EXECUTIVE EQUIPMENT

The new Toyota Camry features all the equipment demanded by the executive car market and advanced technology usually associated with premium brands. Many advanced equipment items are standard across both 2.4-litre and the 3.0-litre V6 model, ensuring that all Camry customers benefit from the comprehensive specification.

Fully automatic climate control air conditioning, electric windows, central double locking with remote activation, electrically operated retractable mirrors – which feature water repellent glass – and electric front seats are just part of the comprehensive equipment that is fitted as standard.

The new Camry also employs an automatic wiper system with sensors in the windscreen. It automatically controls the wiper speed, via a sensor, depending on the amount of water on the glass. The driver can adjust the sensitivity of the sensor, via a control on the wiper switch.

The automatic light control is a high tech feature that adds to the active safety of Camry. This feature detects the ambient light and automatically turns the lights on and off accordingly. This feature is not just a driver’s aid, it also makes the car easier to see in low light by pedestrians and other car users, thus reducing the risk of an accident.

UV-reducing glass is used for all exterior glass, whereas the windscreen and the front side windows are coated with a water-repellent coating to aid visibility in the rain. The exterior mirrors are constructed to minimise vibrations and have a rain clearing surface. They are also heated and retractable, reducing the risk of damage when parked.

The audio system has been engineered for ease of operation and superior sound quality. A stereo radio with single CD player is standard equipment; CDX derivatives are fitted with a six-disc autochanger as standard equipment. A cassette player is also available on the 3.0-litre V6 when satellite navigation is fitted.

A six-speaker system was developed for Camry to create a true surround sound. Thanks to the enlarged tweeters at the top of the instrument panel, the clarity of the sound was vastly improved, especially in mid range, while the enlarged speakers in the front doors provide a more powerful bass response.

Available as a dealer fitted accessory on the Camry 2.4 is Toyota’s excellent turn-by-turn satellite navigation system that utilises the main central display panel in the audio unit. On the 3.0-litre V6 a full map DVD satellite navigation system is available as an option.

This comes with a 6.5-inch colour screen with touch screen operation. The most frequently used functions have buttons set up around the screen and a one-touch operation reveals the loading apertures for the CD and cassette.

New Camry on-the-road prices are as follows:

  • 2.4 GLS VVT-i manual – £19,495
  • 2.4 GLS VVT-i manual with cruise control – £19,795
  • 2.4 GLS VVT-i auto – £20,495
  • 2.4 GLS VVT-i auto with cruise control – £20,795

CAMRY IN THE FLEET MARKET

Striking new looks, enhanced quality and equipment levels and high performance engines coupled with a strong overall cost of ownership package will bring renewed credibility and appeal for Camry in the highly-competitive executive segment of the fleet market.

Here, not only are standard and optional specification along with mechanical refinement important, but competitive running costs are vital. Thanks to the economy and extended maintenance periods of the new engines, and Toyota’s continuing work on reducing parts prices for servicing, the running costs of the new Camry are among the best in this competitive sector.

Jon Pollock, General Manager, Toyota Fleet comments: “With the Toyota range remaining the widest of any manufacturer in the UK, new Camry now offers a truly attractive proposition at the top end of the vehicle range.

“We already have considerable interest from a number of our large customers and expect high demands on our demonstration fleet.”

The new Toyota Camry went on sale in the UK on 1 November and is offered with Toyota’s three year/60,000 miles warranty together with a three year paintwork and 12 year anti-perforation warranty.
