AMERICA’S BEST SELLING CAR GETS BETTER FOR BRITAIN

The Toyota Camry is the best selling car in the USA and is adopting a new look for the UK in 2000. A host of detail changes to its bodywork plus a realignment of prices and extra standard equipment aim to keep it ahead of the executive car pack in the millennium year.

SLEEKER LOOKS

A number of subtle changes to the Camry’s body give it a more integrated and sleeker appearance. A new, more rounded front bumper, bigger front fog lights and redesigned front radiator grille are fitted plus new headlamps which feature four halogen bulbs in place of the previous two bulbs.

At the rear, a new bumper and rear combination lights give the Camry a softer look while the side profile is improved with the addition of chrome rubbing strips. A new type of wheel trim is also introduced on the 2.2 derivatives with cloth upholstery.

SAFE CHOICE

The Camry achieved four stars in the independent NCAP crash tests, not surprising because it has been designed to exceed crash safety regulations. It has five, 3-point seat belts, twin front airbags, side airbags, ABS, side impact bars and three adjustable rear seat head restraints. Traction control is standard on the V6 models.

HIGH VALUE RANGE

The Camry model line up offers a choice of 2.2-litre, four cylinder 16v or 3.0-litre, V6 24v petrol engines, the latter available with either manual or electronically controlled automatic transmissions (manual option not available on the V6).

The highlight of the revised range is the introduction of the 2.2-litre 16v model with leather upholstery, alloy wheels, power front seats and a CD player as standard representing excellent value for money from just £23,150 on the road.

The 2000 model year Toyota Camry range comprises:

  • 2.2 16v manual with cloth upholstery – £20,180 OTR
  • 2.2 16v automatic with cloth upholstery – £21,180 OTR
  • 2.2 16v manual with leather upholstery and alloy wheels – £23,150 OTR
  • 2.2 16v automatic with leather upholstery and alloy wheels – £24,150 OTR
  • 3.0 24v automatic with leather upholstery and alloy wheels – £26,450 OTR

EXTRA FEATURES

A number of new features have been added to the latest Camry for added comfort and convenience. The V6 model is now equipped as standard with traction control for improved grip in slippery conditions. The V6 engine also now meets the latest European ‘Step 3’ emissions standards.

New Camrys fitted with the automatic transmission now have a shift lock override facility. Under normal circumstances, the driver must depress the brake pedal to move the gear selector out of Park mode. This ensures that there is no danger of the vehicle accidentally being moved out of Park. Depressing the shift lock override button allows the driver to override this facility for added convenience.

A gas damper type bonnet stay is added making it easier to access the engine compartment (a new feature that’s not likely to be used much judging by the Camry’s outstanding reputation for reliability).

When stopping to refuel, the driver is now informed on which side the fuel filler cap is located by way of an indication arrow on the instrument panel. Two hooks are also now fitted in the boot from which to hang grocery bags.

Finally, the Camry’s remote keyless entry system and alarm/immobiliser are integrated into the key itself for easier operation.

TOYOTA’S BEST KEPT SECRET

Toyota sells around a thousand Camrys a year in the UK to a discerning customer base looking for refinement, value for money, low running costs and understated excellence. The Americans rather like the Camry too. In fact it was the best selling passenger car in the USA in 1998 and looks likely to repeat this feat in 1999.
