Toyota Kayoibako customisable battery electric vehicle concept to be revealed at the Japan Mobility Show

17 October 2023

Toyota will reveal its new Kayoibako battery electric vehicle concept at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo (26 October – 5 November), a model that looks to a mobility future where people will have the freedom to live the life they want.

The vehicle takes its name and inspiration from kayoibako shipping containers that can be configured with interchangeable interiors to meet different goods transportation needs. Toyota sought to create a “quality base unit of mobility,” focusing on interior and exterior packaging and affordability.

The “ultra-expandable” design allows the vehicle to be tailored for different uses. With hardware and software that can also be customised for different purposes, the Kayoibako can function as an element in smart grids and other intelligent social systems.

It can also provide social infrastructure solutions. For example, it can be customised for low-volume goods transportation and used by smart distribution systems for last-mile logistics. It can also be adapted to support local communities: fitted with shelves to serve as a mobile shop, or seats to operate as a shuttle bus.

Likewise, private users will be able to customise their vehicle to express their personal tastes and preferences, giving the vehicle a one-of-a-kind quality and appeal. Kayoibako will also contribute to Toyota’s “mobility for all” commitment with designs enabling easier access for wheelchair users.

The concept vehicle on show measures 3,990mm long, 1,790mm wide and 1,855mm high and has a 2,800mm wheelbase. The interior has a maximum length of 3,127mm (2,141 on the driver’s side), 1,485mm width and 1,437mm height.
