The next evolution of the GR Yaris performance hatchback introduces motorsports-inspired improvements to enhance steering and vehicle control, particular when pushing towards the limit.
Toyota Gazoo Racing’s activities, in particular its multi-championship-winning FIA World Rally Championship team, have shaped the GR Yaris and driven its continuous improvement since its 2020 launch, exemplifying the TGR philosophy of making ever-better cars through competition.
Over that time, GR Yaris has been pushed to its limits in the extreme environments of rallying and racing where problems are solved through thorough data analysis, the detailed examination of damaged parts and direct feedback from drivers.
Once again, motorsport know-how has guided the latest evolution of GR Yaris to produce detailed updates to optimise the driving experience.
The starting point is the steering wheel, the interface between driver and car. A new wheel has been designed with a smaller diameter, reduced by 5mm to 360mm, enabling faster steering inputs. The grip area has been enlarged and the thumb rests removed to give better response in motorsports conditions.
Another change direct from motorsports experience is a revised switch layout on the steering wheel. Competition drivers often turn the wheel through 180 degrees without moving their hand position which can cause wheel-mounted buttons to be pressed accidentally. GR Yaris addresses this issue with all buttons moved further from the driver’s hand positions.
The car adopts new high-grip Bridgestone Potenza Race tyres which benefit from revisions to the tread pattern, internal construction and rubber compound. Drivers will feel more grip and control, with enhanced circuit performance and reduced road noise.
To maximise the benefit of this additional grip, front and rear damper settings have been modified. Based on TGR’s experience of high-grip tyres in competitions such as the Super Taikyu endurance racing series and Japanese Rally Championship, the electric power steering has been updated. The steering assistance operating range has been expanded, even under heavy braking and high-load cornering, by optimising the torsion bar rigidity inside the torque sensor and updating the system’s control software.
Other details include an exclusive GR emblem on the driver’s airbag cover and the addition of a driver monitor camera to the array of standard safety features. Heated seat and steering wheel functions are available, in combination with the vertical handbrake option.
The updates apply to both the GR Yaris and the GR Yaris Aero Performance. Details of UK availability and pricing will be announced later in 2026.
