Former racing driver Billy Monger today launches What Moves Us, a new five-part YouTube series created in partnership with Toyota (GB).
In the films, Billy, a Toyota Ambassador, meets four young people who have faced personal challenges around disability, confidence and self-belief. A double amputee himself following a racing accident in 2017, he is both interviewer and mentor, taking time to get to know each person, finding out what motivates them and then creating an opportunity that helps them move closer to their goal.
The first film introduces Alfie, a promising basketball player who had a foot amputated following a car accident. Billy learns about how he has adjusted to life after surgery and helps him explore ways of continuing to enjoy the sport he loves.
Other subjects include Khianna who lost her sight and is regaining her confidence and independence through horse riding; Lois, who had a leg amputated when a baby but wants to build her confidence through running; and William, who has cerebral palsy and has found a new sense of purpose through wheelchair rugby.
Billy Monger said: “I know from my own experience how much sport and movement can change our outlook and give you something to work towards. With What Moves Us I wanted to take the conversations I’ve been having with people facing similar challenges and find ways to help them move forward in their own lives.
“Everyone’s journey is different, but having the right support and community can help you see what’s possible. It’s been brilliant getting to know everyone and seeing what sport and movement mean to them.”
The idea for the series came from Billy’s own experiences. Following his accident, he found he was increasingly approached by people living with similar disabilities who wanted to share their experiences or ask for advice. He wanted to find practical ways to help people discover new opportunities, build confidence and reconnect with the things they enjoy.
The project further reflects the shared ambition of Toyota and ParalympicsGB’s Every Body Moves programme to empower disabled people to become active in a way that works for them. Toyota is the long-standing partner of the award-winning programme, which draws on the experiences of disabled people to help them discover opportunities for inclusive sport and physical activity.
Emma Johnson, Toyota (GB) Director, Brand and Customer Experience, said: “We believe in enabling mobility for all, with no one left behind. Mobility is about more than simply getting from A to B. It’s about helping people access the experiences, connections and opportunities that matter to them. What Moves Us brings this to life through Billy’s experiences and the stories of the people he meets, showing how inclusive opportunities in sport and movement can help people build confidence and discover new possibilities.
“Working with Billy on this project will also increase awareness of the Every Body Moves programme which is helping disabled people across the UK discover local opportunities to take part in sports and physical activities.”
