Cleaner and Greener Toyota Centre Gains Global Excellence Rating For Environmental Performance
£11 million Jemca Enfield development secures BREEAM certification
KEY POINTS
- New Jemca Toyota Enfield centre accorded Excellent rating for sustainability and environmental performance
- Quality confirmed by leading global assessment body BREEAM
- Achievement reflects Toyota’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of all its business operations
Exceptional environmental standards achieved by Jemca Enfield, the latest addition to Toyota’s UK centre network, have been recognised with a BREEAM* Excellent rating, the world’s foremost buildings assessment for best practice in sustainable design, construction and operation.
Right from the drawing board, environmental performance has been a priority for the £11 million centre, demonstrated by innovation and intelligent systems in areas such as energy conservation, carbon emissions, water and materials recycling and operating noise levels.
Key elements that have helped secure BREEAM certification include using a bio-mass boiler and designing workshop and office areas to maximise use of natural light, with electric lighting adjusting automatically in line with the level of daylight. Rainwater is collected and filtered on site and reused for car washing, and the attention detail goes as far as the specification of smaller capacity lavatory cisterns to help reduce water use.
Targets have been set for the site’s CO2 emissions and performance is tracked through continuous monitoring of power consumption. Measures have also been taken to reduce noise pollution by installing plant equipment with low background noise and to ensure security by liaising with police crime prevention specialists on best practice.
Simon Boxall, Jemca Toyota Franchise Director, said: “We are immensely proud that our new centre has obtained the BREEAM Excellent certification, it is the highest recognition for what we have achieved at Enfield in terms of reducing our environmental footprint.
“The major investment we have made in the development sustains Toyota’s commitment to minimising the environmental impact of all areas of its business, not just through the manufacturing of clean and fuel-efficient vehicles.”
Jemca Toyota Enfield is the first Toyota centre in the UK to gain the BREEAM Excellent certification. Toyota GB continues with Space Projects Ltd, the concept architects which designed the development, on further new centre buildings that will achieve similar high environmental standards.
The BREEAM assessment uses recognised measures of performance, set against benchmarks to evaluate a building’s specification, design, construction and use. The areas scrutinise include aspects of energy and water use, the internal environment, pollution, transport, materials, waste, ecology and management processes.
