HIACE SHORT STORY

Toyota has a strong tradition in making durable and reliable vans the business community has come to rely on. This is reflected in the number of older Hiace and Liteace forward control vans still in use on the UK’s roads – proving that Toyota’s commercial vehicles are capable of hard work and high mileages whilst still delivering good reliability.

Renowned for its quality, economy and easy driving style, Hiace is a popular choice in the light commercial market. Building on this strong reputation, the Hiace is to be launched with a fresh new face, improvements to interior specification and a choice of advanced technology, common rail diesel engines.

Wide Range Of Bodystyles

The new Toyota Hiace range will continue to be available in a wide range of body styles and specifications to suit all business users. The basic, three seat panel van has both standard and long wheelbase versions (Gross Vehicle Weight 2.80 to 3.00 tonnes) with the option of wide-opening sliding doors on one or both sides for work in confined, city streets.

The windowed van, with its multiple seating configuration, is also available in either standard or long wheelbase versions (Gross Vehicle Weight 2.55 to 2.9 tonnes) with side sliding doors or a single tailgate rear door for maximum versatility.

The Market

Hiace is now more flexible, reliable and economical to run than ever before and as the Euro-sized semi-bonnet van segment continues to evolve the demand is no longer solely the traditional delivery van market.

There is a growing need for the flexible conversions offered from the Hiace range, including minibuses for schools, crew cabs with six-seats and loadspace for construction companies and refridgerated conversions for food suppliers.

Toyota is confident that the new look exterior, improved interior and a choice of two new 2.5-litre D-4D direct injection common rail diesel engines, with either 88bhp or 102bhp, will offer a formula to attract conquest sales and make an impact in the competitive fleet sector.

Hiace continues to be a popular choice for private business users and large companies. It is available in two wheelbases; standard wheelbase (SWB now 280) or long wheelbase (LWB now 300) on all three grades (S, GS and GLS) with either swing out rear doors or tailgate and one side door, or two side doors on the GS grade.

Sales Success Since the 1970s

Toyota has sold over 90,000 vans in the UK market since it started selling commercial vehicles. Many companies, from small businesses to large corporations, rely on the Hiace to reach their customers throughout the UK. Car wash manufacturers Valematic, hi-tech company Marconi, air-conditioning specialist Barrier Smith, merchandising company Cork International, oil company Burmah Castrol and PTC Construction of Scunthorpe are just a few companies who use Hiace to conduct their everyday business.

The Hiace has evolved from its early role in 1972 to encompass a more flexible vehicle to the UK market today including minibus and crew cab conversions. In 1989 Toyota introduced the Hiace and Hiace Compact vans. The Compact and long wheelbase Hiace were available with a 2.4-litre 8-valve petrol engine with 118bhp while a 2.4-litre 76bhp normally-aspirated diesel was available in the Hiace Compact.

In October 1995, Toyota introduced a completely new Hiace called the PowerVan. The new design saw Toyota move away from the previous forward control, ‘cab-over’ design of the past to a new semi-bonnet design with longitudinally mounted engine. This new design, in standard and long wheelbase formats continues in the market today under the name of simply Hiace.

Hiace is produced in several facilities around the world for all five continents. In Japan alone, more than 4.1 million units have been produced since its launch. Since then, the Toyota Hiace has quite literally been an outstanding commercial success owing to its unrivalled combination of practicality, low cost of ownership, payload, reliability and style. The latest enhancements are designed to make the vehicle even more versatile and to offer users more performance, more convenience and reduced running costs.

ALL-NEW MODEL LINE UP FOR 2002

The new model range carries over the existing SWB and LWB models with either swing out rear doors or tailgate and one or two side doors. The 2002 model line up is named to reflect the Gross Vehicle Weight of the Hiace models. The SWB is 280 and the LWB is 300. (The Gross Vehicle Weight is 2,800kg and 3,000kg respectively).

The 2002 model range comprises a choice of the all-new 2.5-litre direct injection common rail D-4D diesel engines with either 88bhp or 102bhp. The entry-level model is the S grade 280, 88bhp, with swing out rear doors. This is followed by the S grade 300, 88bhp, also with swing out rear doors. The popular GS grade comprises the 280, 88bhp, and the 300, 88bhp, with either tailgate or swing out rear doors. The GS grade 300, 102bhp, comes with two side doors.

A new high grade GLS, replacing the previous 74bhp GX grade, comes with tailgate full bulkhead and one side door. The 2.7-litre petrol engine with 141bhp is still available on the GLS grade, replacing the GX, with tailgate and one side door. This derivative is only available to special order. A full bulkhead is standard on all GS swing out rear door models and also on all GS 300 versions.

In addition to the introduction of the new D-4D engine, Hiace also benefits from a range and price realignment. The introduction of a simple pricing structure adds consistent high value. For example the price increase from S to GS is £1,000 and £1,500 for GS to GLS (including 102bhp engine). The SWB and LWB price walk is £1,500

S grade

The S grade entry price at £11,435 offers excellent value with the lowest ever price for the current generation. The entry level Hiace is also competitively placed among its closest rivals at almost £600 less than both the entry Ford Transit 260 2.0td at £12,000 and new Renault Trafic SL 2.7dCi at £11,995.

A new LWB entry model has been introduced at only £12,935. This is £680 below the current 74bhp LWB model. The equivalent VW Transporter 1200 LWB is over £1,300 more at £14,260 with the same payload and a 88bhp Di engine. The S grade includes three front seats, twin blind rear doors, twin 12v batteries and Sony RDS stereo cassette.

GS grade

In addition to the new engine, the volume grade benefits from specification improvements including remote central door locking, tachometer and adjustable steering column as standard equipment. The 300 GS also benefits from a standard bulkhead on both tailgate and swing out rear door versions. The best selling model, the 280 GS, is priced at £12,435.

GLS grade

A new high grade GLS version is introduced on the SWB which features the high powered 102bhp engine, ABS brakes, three front seats and factory bulkhead as standard. This new model is priced at £13,935 or £1,500 over the GS grade. The GLS grade also replaces the GX trim on the 2.7i petrol version and the LWB 300.

ADVANCED DIESEL ENGINES

The new Hiace commercial vehicle range will be offered with a choice of Toyota D-4D direct injection, turbocharged, common rail diesel engines – in addition to the existing 2.7-litre petrol unit.

The new engines will provide commercial vehicle operators with more power, more performance and reduced fuel consumption over existing units.

The adoption of the new D-4D diesel engines allows for extended service intervals 10,000mile health and safety check and 20,000 mile service intervals. Certain key components have been designed for increased durability. The combination of reduced fuel consumption and extended service intervals will result in significantly reduced cost of ownership.

The new diesel engines are the latest developments of Toyota’s advanced D-4D technology, which was originally developed for the passenger car range. Hiace customers will have a choice of engines, depending on the power output required.

The low output D-4D common rail, turbocharged unit offers 88bhp at 3,800rpm and a flat 192Nm (139lb ft) of torque from 1,200rpm to 3,000rpm.

The more powerful version, also turbocharged, offers 102bhp at 3,600rpm and 260Nm (188lb ft) of torque from 1,600rpm to 2,400rpm.

Both these engines offer outstanding economy and reliable load-carrying in typical, tough working environments. At the same time they offer the other benefits of Toyota’s advanced, common rail technology – low noise, instant starting and low emissions levels. Both engines comply with European Step 3 emissions.

Oil Maintenance Management System

The new diesel engines are equipped with a sophisticated oil maintenance management system, which helps reduce operating costs by extending service intervals.

The engine control unit monitors the oil contaminant level (through engine rpm and amount of fuel injected) and the distance travelled since the last oil change. If either of these reaches the specified level, the engine oil change reminder light illuminates and can only be reset after an oil change.

The real advantage of this system is that it can warn the driver when the oil’s properties have reached a certain deterioration level, ensuring a longer life for the engine when the oil change is carried out.

Electronic Accelerator Pedal

To complement the use of two highly sophisticated diesel engines, Hiace comes equipped with an Electronic Accelerator Pedal. The accelerator pedal position is monitored by a throttle position sensor, which will pass the information to the engine’s ECU. The advantage of this system is a more precise throttle control, which benefits a rapid response and better fuel economy.

FRESH NEW FACE

A powerful, modern radiator grille will help distinguish the new Hiace from previous models while metallic paint versions of the commercial vehicle also get colour keyed wing mirrors, door handles and side door rails to give them a more co-ordinated look. New wheel trims are also available.

Selected models will have spherical door mirrors with remote control to offer more convenience and greater safety. Certain versions will also feature new-design wheel caps, for a more modern look.

To emphasise the use of advanced technology common rail diesel, vehicles fitted with the new engines option will carry prominent D-4D badging on both front wings.

More Convenience

Hiace customers will find a series of subtle changes inside the vehicle to boost operator convenience and comfort, such as:

  • a seat-side box equipped with clipboard and pen holder for the passenger seat in bench seat models;
  • the adoption of a digital trip-meter and the addition of a passenger grab handle on the A-pillar;
  • a new seat trim design is available;
  • a keyless entry system standard on all except the S model;
  • auto-up and jam protection functions are added to the driver’s side power window on the GLS grade;
  • lamp turn-off and “key” pull-out warning systems will alert the driver if he/she forgets the keys in the ignition or the lights on (as standard equipment);
  • side door steps are now covered by resin and have a courtesy lamp (on GLS grade);
  • in the versions with door side pockets, a bottle holder (for 1.5 and 0.5 litres) is added (except in GL grade).

TOYOTA SPECIALIST VEHICLES

Specialist vehicles tailored to meet specific customer needs will continue to be an important focus for the Hiace 2002 model range. Hiace is available in a range of mobility, taxi, minibus, Hi-Top and refridgerated conversions. Toyota also offers motorhomes through a joint venture with a well-established conversion company Devon.

Two conversions, added in 2001, add versatility to the Hiace range. The Hiace Crew Cab seats up to six people while maintaining a spacious load space. A 14/15 seater minibus also joined the range in 2001. O & H in Goole, Yorkshire now carry out all conversions for minibus and Crew Cab. A full three-year warranty is offered on these Toyota Specialist Vehicles.
