Setting fresh standards in the large MPV segment when launched last summer, the Toyota Previa is now available with a 114bhp 2.0-litre D-4D diesel engine that combines optimum performance with low fuel consumption and low emissions. Previa D-4D is available in manual gearbox form only.
Previa is a striking, large MPV that has been designed from the outset to carry up to eight adult passengers and their luggage in comfort. It offers flexible accommodation, excellent ride and handling.
HIGH TECHNOLOGY, COMMON RAIL DIESEL
The 2.0-litre D-4D common rail, direct injection engine introduced in the Avensis model last year has been specially tuned for the Previa. Maximum power output is 114bhp as opposed to 109bhp with a maximum torque output of 250Nm beginning at just 1,800rpm and ending at 3,000rpm.
The flat torque curve characteristic of this engine means that around 80 per cent of this torque is available from just 1,600rpm upwards providing excellent pulling power when needed without compromising fuel economy.
The introduction of the Previa diesel engine will enable Toyota to build on the already successful launch of this model in the growing European diesel market – forecast to reach five million units a year by 2003.
The Toyota D-4D diesel engine is among the most advanced in the world and a clear example of Toyota’s use of intelligent technology, answering many of the criticisms levelled at diesel engines in the past.
The high pressure, common rail diesel injection system is fitted to a highly efficient, four cylinder, 16-valve engine. For maximum efficiency and power, the engine is also turbocharged and equipped with an intercooler. The use of a variable nozzle turbo (VNT) increases torque output in the mid range section of the rpm-cycle.
The new Toyota common rail diesel engines are among the most fuel efficient on the market today. The 2.0-litre D-4D engine consumes around 12 per cent less fuel than earlier diesel engines and is considerably more fuel efficient than similar performing petrol engines with a low emissions figure of 191g/km.
Potentially harmful emissions are reduced, thanks to the improved fuel consumption and more efficient combustion of the direct injection engine. An exhaust gas recirculation unit (EGR) helps cut NOx emissions by 68 per cent. The new engine produces no smoke and particulate emissions are cut by 44 per cent.
The D4-D engine offers exceptionally low noise, vibration and harshness for an engine of this type. Pilot injection and a more progressive burn in the combustion chamber reduce the ignition shock, which causes the old distinctive diesel engine knock.
AN IDEAL CHOICE FOR PREVIA
The power and economy characteristics of the D-4D engine make it an ideal choice for many Previa MPV customers. The Previa is at the heart of the large family MPV market and has been designed from the outset to carry seven to eight adult passengers and their luggage in comfort and safety over long distances.
European customers in the family MPV market are turning to diesel in increasing numbers. More than 60 per cent of the large MPVs sold in Europe in 2000 were diesel powered.
The Previa has a wide range of seating options to suit customer demand and vehicle function and is available as a seven seater with individual second and third row seats – or as an eight seater with second and third row bench seats.
Whatever seating configuration is chosen, Previa has outstanding luggage carrying capacity. There is ample space behind the third row of seats with a full sized ‘boot’ 530mm long. Both second and third rows of seats slide to create optimum legroom and comfort for passengers.
D-4D Previa is priced at a £1,500 premium over the manual gearbox petrol version, with the GS eight-seat version priced at £21,450; GLS seven and eight seat priced at £22,950 and CDX seven seat at £24,450.
Equipped with a balance shaft to reduce vibration even further in the D-4D engine, Previa has a top speed of 109mph and accelerates from zero to 62mph in 13.8 seconds. D-4D offers outstanding fuel economy for an MPV in this class, achieving 39.2mpg on the combined cycle. This exceptional figure means that over 650 miles is attainable on one tank.
