The Toyota bZ4X battery-electric SUV is to undergo its first full lifecycle enhancement since the model was launched to spearhead Toyota’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) programme in 2022. The new package of technical upgrades will strengthen the model’s performance capabilities and enrich the ownership experience.
Since its launch, bZ4X has established itself as one of the top five best-selling models in its category in Europe. The latest changes will reinforce its position at the forefront of Toyota’s expanding BEV portfolio.
bZ4X is designed and engineered as an authentic SUV, optionally available with an all-wheel drive system that gives increased controllability and genuine rough-road capabilities. Its energy efficiency is founded on Toyota’s long-established leadership in electrified powertrain technologies, experience that also underpins battery quality, durability and reliability. Toyota offers Battery Care Programme, covering the battery for up to 10 years of vehicle age or up to 650,000 miles driven, subject to an annual battery health check**.
Dual battery option
The bZ4X range is to grow with the introduction of two battery options. The mid-size SUV will be offered with a choice of a 57.7kWh or 73.1kWh battery (gross capacity), so that customers can select a version that best suits their driving requirements and their budget.
The 57.7kWh battery will be exclusive to the front-wheel drive bZ4X; the 73.1kWh unit will be available in both front and all-wheel drive versions.
Maximum range according to WLTP drive cycle is expected to be 356 miles (tentative value pending homologation), depending on grade and powertrain.
Increased power with revised eAxles
The bZ4X’s compact, lightweight and energy-efficient eAxles have been upgraded with the introduction of silicon carbide (SIC) semiconductors. This helps deliver greater power output, making the new bZ4X one of the most powerful Toyota models available in Europe outside the GR performance car range.
Three drivetrains are available:
Drivetrain | Battery capacity | Max. output |
FWD | 57.7kWh | 165bhp/167 DIN hp/123kW |
FWD | 73.1kWh | 221bhp/224 DIN hp/165kW |
AWD | 73.1kWh | 338bhp/343 DIN hp/252kW |
The all-wheel drive version’s towing capacity has been doubled, to 1,500kg. A new 22kW AC onboard charger will also be available on higher grade models; the maximum DC charging power remains 150kW.
Design and comfort
The design has been updated both inside and out. The front of the car presents a sleeker, more elegant look with improved aerodynamics, while the interior has been fully updated. There is a new centre console for easy connection and use of digital devices and a new instrument panel design, with a 14-inch multimedia screen fitted as standard.
Thanks to updates to the suspension settings and adjustments to the bodywork, the new bZ4X will also benefit from lower noise and vibration levels and improved comfort and driving dynamics.
Software updates
The new bZ4X is equipped with a battery pre-conditioning function as standard. By pre-conditioning the battery, an optimal temperature for charging can be ensured, allowing for higher charging power. This function can be activated manually or automatically by navigating to a fast-charging station.
An EV routing function is provided in the navigation system. This will automatically select a route with recommended, convenient charging stations, based on the car’s battery state of charge and remaining driving range. This function has already been made available for current bZ4X models.
Market introduction
The new bZ4X is expected to be introduced in the UK and European markets from after summer this year. Details of the UK model range and specifications will be announced later.
