Toyota Comment on New Car Sales Results for January 2010
Statement by Miguel Fonseca, Managing Director Toyota GB PLC
Miguel Fonseca, Managing Director Toyota GB, has issued the following statement concerning Toyota’s new car sales results in January.
“Figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show that sales of new Toyota cars in the UK fell by 12.14 per cent, compared to the total recorded during the same month in 2009. However, our market share figure for January 2010 was 5.05 per cent, which is line with our 2009 full year share of 5.14 per cent.
“We don’t believe this reduction in January 2010 sales, when compared to January 2009 sales, is a result of market reaction to the accelerator pedal safety recall we have announced for certain Toyota models in the UK.
“It can be attributed to the fact that Toyota’s 2009 January performance was exceptional: sales were in excess of 8,300 units, supported by the introduction that month of the new iQ and Avensis models. This gave us an almost unprecedented 7.46 per cent share of the total UK market, well above the full year market share of 5.14 per cent.
“This level of performance was never going to be matched in January this year, but our results, in spite of the reduction in volume, remain healthy, with Toyota maintaining a market share of more than five per cent.
