Toyota Gazoo Racing win in Portugal to secure fourth consecutive W2RC World Championship
- One-two finish for the GR Hilux EVO on the BP Ultimate Rally Raid
- Lucas Moraes and Armand Monléon overall winners for first time in W2RC
- Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings second
Toyota Gazoo Racing W2RC delivered a commanding one-two victory at BP Ultimate Rally Raid Portugal yesterday (29 September) to secure the 2025 FIA World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC) manufacturers’ title with one round still to go.
The GR Hilux EVOs completed the team’s second win of the season on Stage 5, which took crews on a high-speed 64-mile timed loop through forests around Lisbon to conclude a spectacular 878 miles of competitive action over six days.
Lucas Moraes and navigator Armand Monleón won a W2RC event outright for the first time after a relentless and reliable performance throughout the week in their No203 GR Hilux EVO. They capped an impressive week with fifth place on Stage 5.
Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings completed a one-two for TGR W2RC with sixth on Stage 5 in the No 202 Hilux to finish second overall, 53 seconds behind their team-mates. That result narrows the deficit for both crews in their respective title races.
In the drivers’ World Championship, Lategan is in second with 131 points, nine away from the leader, with Moraes one point further back on 130. Cummings and Monleón are second and third respectively in the navigators’ standings, 14 and 15 points off the lead.
Seth Quintero and Andrew Short were unable to participate on Stage 5 following the engine issue which struck their No204 GR Hilux EVO just before the end of Saturday’s action. Quintero is fourth in the drivers’ standings with 84 points going into the season finale.
The fight for the drivers’ and navigators’ World Championship honours now shifts to North Africa for the fifth and final round of the season, Rallye du Maroc, on 6-11 October.
Team quotes
Lucas Moraes “I am really happy to deliver this win for the team, the second in a row: South Africa and Portugal. The main thing is that we have defended the manufacturers’ World Championship. The car was unbelievable for the whole week, and we ran a very strategic race, a clever one. We only had one puncture throughout the whole rally and that was key for the win. I am also happy to deliver this win for Brazil, because this is the first time for a Brazilian to win a World Championship round. Thanks to the whole Toyota Gazoo Racing W2RC team for this opportunity and for their hard work.”
Bart Eelen, Head of TGR W2RC: “I’m delighted that the team could secure the manufacturers’ title one race before the end of the season. And it was definitely a challenging season. I believe this sport has become much more interesting with the arrival of Dacia and Ford, who have given us a real run for our money. But we could count on our great crews, great engineers and great mechanics – it’s unbelievable how much each of these people put into it day after day. We still have the drivers’ championship to fight for, so the next race in Morocco promises to be as exciting as this one.”
