Toyota Hybrids A Wily Choice For Roadrunners Gatwick
Taxi firm aims to be “greenest in the south”
Surrey’s RoadRunners Gatwick taxi business has signed a deal worth more than half a million pounds to add 20 Toyotas to its fleet over the coming year. Most of the cars will be full hybrids, including Prius, and one of the first new seven-seat Prius+.
Deliveries have already begun via Robert Eames, Business Centre Manager at Motorline Toyota Gatwick, with all cars featuring the distinctive black and green RoadRunners Gatwick livery.
RoadRunners Gatwick Ltd has grown steadily since it was established in 1990. Today it operates a fleet of almost 200 vehicles including estate cars and minibuses, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The company has chosen Toyota before, and has run Prius on its fleet. Its latest purchase sees it taking further steps to lower its emissions as a business. Toyota full hybrids are able to operate solely on electric power at lower speeds which allows them to run in slow traffic with zero tailpipe emissions. Furthermore they also produce no particulate matter and have very low NOx emissions, both of which affect air quality and so pose a risk to human health.
Muzaffar Hussain, RoadRunners Gatwick Managing Director, said; ”We feel it is important as a company to take steps to reduce our emissions but also address wider issues such as air quality which affects peoples health. Our investment in full hybrid technology supports our tagline of Taxis That Don’t Cost The Earth reflecting the future of our company. Our goal is to become the greenest taxi fleet in the south of England.
We have already seen our costs come down by using the Toyota Prius on our fleet, with fuel savings, exemption from the London Congestion Charge and zero vehicle excise duty charges each year.”
Using the latest in-car technology, RoadRunners Gatwick is able to constantly monitor its fleet allowing it to allocate 24/7 the closest car to every job. This intelligent strategy reduces fuel bills and improves delivery times.
Driving full hybrids has also proved popular among the drivers says Hasan Yavuz who has been a driver with RoadRunners Gatwick for three years. “Our customers normally make reference to the fact there is no engine noise at lower speed, and as drivers the extra savings we make on fuel really help at a time of rising prices, he said.”
