New Yaris news
A series of enhancements have been announced for the Yaris range, including new digital features, additional safety system functions and a more powerful hybrid powertrain option for high-grade models. Order books open later this year with the new car scheduled to arrive in early 2024. Read more here.
The changes are certain to strengthen Yaris’s sales-winning status. The Yaris range recently became one of Toyota’s eight-figure successes, joining the elite ranks of models that have achieved 10 million-plus global sales. Read more here.
Hydrogen for heavy haulage
Following an earlier agreement to supply hydrogen fuel cell modules to a new European start-up truck manufacturer Hyliko, Toyota is also supporting the Dutch VDL Group to convert heavy-duty trucks to use the technology. The project has the potential to accelerate the decarbonisation of the road logistics sector, an important element in Toyota’s strategy to achieve full carbon neutrality in Europe by 2040. More CaetanoBus hydrogen-fuelled electric vehicles are set to enter service in European cities. The City Gold H2, built by Toyota’s manufacturing partner Caetano in Portugal, will adopt the new generation Toyota hydrogen fuel cell system from next year, giving it an operating range of more than 500km/300 miles. Up to 60 vehicles are set to cover the city of Strasbourg in France and more will enter service with operators elsewhere in France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Read more here.
Electrified vehicle batteries assessed for renewable energy storage
The worldwide drive to reduce carbon is seeing more energy generated from renewable sources – energy that needs a suitable storage system. Toyota Motor Corporation has joined forces with a leading Japanese power company to explore how batteries developed for electrified vehicles can be used for this purpose, initially at a wind farm project. Toyota Mobility Foundation initiates digital “local helper” platform
The Toyota Mobility Foundation has helped create a digital platform, Local Helper, designed to help connect volunteers with people needing support in local communities. Having successfully completed an initial trial in Germany, the platform, developed by Erlkönig.io is being made available to other regions, free of charge. Read more here.
Hachioji: the Toyota design centre at the forefront of future mobility
Even within Toyota, the Hachioji design centre is not well-known, but its work is at the cutting edge of robotics and future mobility. Toyota Times has lifted the lid on intriguing projects that are under development, some influenced by the way animals move in the natural world. Read more here.
President Sato address
Koji Sato is the new President of Toyota Motor Corporation. In his first major media briefing, he was joined by other senior executives in setting out the company’s new management policy and future direction, including the role of battery electric vehicles and other electrified technologies. Fifth generation Toyota hybrid tech
Toyota’s market-leading hybrid electric technology has reached its fifth generation since making its debut back in 1997 on the original Prius. Today’s more powerful, more efficient system is featured in the revised Corolla range in the UK and will be rolled out further in the company’s range, including the up-coming all-new Toyota C-HR.
