The fuel cell future of trucking
The days of noisy trucks with belching exhausts may be numbered, as Toyota explores the potential of hydrogen fuel cells to power heavy duty transport. Project Portal is set to put a zero emission truck into service with the Los Angeles and Long Beach port authorities this summer in a feasibility study into how the technology could contribute to the ports’ clean air action plan.
Convert your Toyota commercial
Toyota has announced the first authorised partners for its new light commercial vehicle conversion programmes. Examples of the new conversions, including a Hilux Tipper and Proace refrigerated van were on display at the Commercial Vehicle Show this week to demonstrate some of the ready-to-go options now on offer Read more here.
Connected cabs
Toyota is working technology partner KDDI and Tokyo’s taxi hire association to start testing of a Connected Taxis programme. By linking cabs to data centres, it’s hoped new services will be possible, making taxi use more convenient for customers and drivers alike. Read more here.
The factory powered by a fuel cell
Fuel cell and hybrid power technologies are not just for cleaner cars, they are being trialled by Toyota as a means of providing zero emission power for manufacturing. New generating equipment has been installed in the Motomachi factory to test performance, durability and efficiency. Read more here.

Bond car to lead Toyota’s classic parade
The famous 2000GT convertible that was a four-wheeled star of the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice will have the honour of leading the parade to open the Toyota Automobile Museum’s 28th annual classic car festival on 28 May. The sports car, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, will take pride of place in a cavalcade that includes not just rare Toyotas but many other models that have had a big influence on vehicle design and engineering.
