Yousuf Ashraf is the Guild of Motoring Writers’ Toyota Young Writer of the Year
Yousuf Ashraf is the winner of the Toyota Young Writer of the Year title in the 2025 Guild of Motoring Writers Awards. A senior staff writer for evo magazine, he impressed the judges with a series of features that strongly evoked time and place and put the reader “in the moment” of the story.
Ashraf received his award from Charles Holcomb, Toyota (GB) Head of Public Relations, at the guild’s annual presentation dinner at the Royal Automobile Club in London last Thursday (4 December).
He said: “I grew up in the world of cars at my father’s car dealership in Cardiff. At 16 or 17 I was writing a blog and giving my opinion from the passenger seat before I had a licence. I moved on to making YouTube videos before gaining work experience at Autocar. I joined the team at Auto Express and then moved to evo in 2023.”
Commending his entry, the judges remarked: “His fine use of language to paint a picture and evoke a mood in his excellent longer-form feature articles make you want to read more.”
Ashraf was joined on the shortlist for this year’s award by Alex Wolstenholme of Autocar and Dino Buratti of Which?
