Smart Safety Systems Help Toyota Yaris Gain Five-Star Euro NCAP Safety Rating

13 December 2017

The 2017 Toyota Yaris has passed through Euro NCAP’s independent testing programme with flying colours, gaining the top, all-round five-star safety rating. This covers the protection afforded to the driver, child and adult passengers and pedestrians, together with the effectiveness of the car’s active safety systems – technology that can help prevent an accident from happening.

The result is testimony to Toyota’s commitment to delivering the highest safety standards in all its vehicles, ensuring that advanced systems that can help prevent accidents, or lessen the consequences of an impact, are available across the board, not just on higher grade models. This “democratisation” of safety technology is reflected in Toyota Safety Sense being made a standard feature of all versions of Yaris.

This package of active safety and driver assistance features includes a Pre-Collision System with autonomous emergency braking, Automatic High Beam and Lane Departure Alert. In the UK, all models apart from the entry-level Yaris Active also benefit from Road Sign Assist, which recognises important warnings and commands on motorways and major routes and repeats them in the driver’s multi-information display.

The 2017 Toyota Yaris also benefits from a series of additional features designed to improve passenger safety. Rear seatbelts are fitted with force limiters and pretensioners; the head restraints have been redesigned to provide better protection against whiplash injury; and the shape of the curtain airbags has been revised. Additionally, child seat installation has been made easier with adjustments to the Isofix anchoring system and labelling.

Matt Harrison, Toyota’s Vice President for European Sales and Marketing, said: “We believe that the best contribution we can make to improving road safety is to standardise functions that can help the driver avoid an accident, or at least minimise the consequences if one does happen. That’s why almost every new Toyota sold in Europe is now equipped with Toyota Safety Sense.”
