The system features a battery with 30 per cent greater capacity, delivering more power, acceleration and efficiency and faster charging. A revised system design brings the additional benefits of a more dynamic drive and a spacious interior.
The all-new RAV4 will be available in Europe as a plug-in hybrid or a full hybrid, emphasising Toyota’s multi-pathway approach towards carbon neutrality. This provides customers with a choice of sustainable options, regardless of where they live or their individual circumstances.
Details of the UK model range and specifications will be announced in due course.
Maximum potential with the latest hybrid technology
Toyota’s hybrid technology reaches the next level in the all-new RAV4 with a next generation plug-in hybrid system.
A new high-capacity 22.7kWh lithium-ion battery enables an extended all-electric range of 62 miles (100km, WLTP combined*), sufficient for most customers’ daily driving needs. The battery pack has its roots in Toyota’s electric vehicle development programme and allows for significantly faster charging. Plug-in charging with a DC 50kW onboard charger – a rare feature for a D-segment SUV – can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 30 minutes, depending on conditions. Charging at home or with standard public chargers is also quicker thanks to a new 11kW AC charger which is twice as fast as the previous version – around three hours for a 10 to 80 per cent charge.
An improved front motor benefits from a 16kW increase in power to 150kW, combining with the new battery to provide powerful acceleration. Total output from the intelligent all-wheel drive (AWD-i) RAV4 is class leading at 300bhp (304 DIN hp/224kW), enabling 0-62mph acceleration in 5.8 seconds.
The battery pack maintains reliable and consistent performance thanks to improved cooling. Its thermal management system switches automatically between coolant circuits depending on the operating conditions, keeping the battery at an ideal temperature to maintain optimum efficiency and charging performance.
The new plug-in hybrid system also contributes to enhanced driving dynamics with the battery’s under-floor location securing a lower centre of gravity and increased body rigidity.
A front-wheel-drive (FWD) configuration is introduced on a plug-in hybrid RAV4 for the first time, making the technology accessible to more customers. In this version, the RAV4 Plug-in 270, maximum power is 264bhp (268 DIN hp/197kW).
The full hybrid system has also been updated with a series of improvements to the transaxle, power control unit, battery and other components. Increased motor output contributes to seamless acceleration and prompt responsive when pulling away, with direct driving response. The full hybrid RAV4 220 AWD-i’s maximum power has increased to 188bhp (191 DIN hp/141kW); in the front-wheel drive version the figure is 181bhp (183 DIN hp/135kW).
The new generation also brings the introduction of a series of products and services to make the ownership experience smooth, rewarding and enjoyable, including dedicated PHEV insurance and Toyota charging solutions. Toyota also aims to ensure minimal environmental impact by maximising the mileage driven in EV mode.
GR SPORT
The all-new RAV4 GR Sport delivers a more dynamic driving experience and a motorsports-inspired character.
The chassis has a 20mm wider tread and the suspension benefits from high-performance dampers, strengthened rear bracing and retuned springs and power steering for increased stability and an engaging drive. Lightweight 20-inch black alloy wheels, in an exclusive five-unit, twin-spoke design, also contribute to airflow management.
A distinctive “functional matrix” grille design creates an eye-catching and sporty first impression with its GR-exclusive hexagonal G-mesh pattern, which creates a deeper 3D effect.
In the cabin, details emphasise the model’s connection to the multiple World Championship-winning Toyota Gazoo Racing teams, including console knee pads, an aluminium pedal set, and sports seats. The black interior finish is intended to encourage a focus on the road ahead. It features discreet GR logos and red accents, including on the steering wheel, knee pads and the GR Sport-exclusive synthetic leather and suede seat upholstery.
Advanced software enables new safety technology
The Arene software development platform marks the beginning of a new era of software-defined vehicles in which advanced digital technology creates new opportunities to enhance safety and contribute to Toyota’s ultimate goal of zero road accidents.
Arene enables a new generation of Toyota Safety Sense, making its debut in the all-new RAV4. This delivers a comprehensive suite of safety and driver assistance systems as standard, operating with faster response.
Front Cross Traffic Alert is a new feature for RAV4. It protects the vehicle from crossing traffic at busy junctions, by detecting vehicles passing in front and issuing a visual alert before activating an audible warning if a high collision risk is anticipated. It complements the new Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) which alerts the driver to any vehicles they might not have seen in their side mirrors. The BSM also includes a new Rear Vehicle Approach Indicator, designed to make driving less stressful, especially on motorways. This issues a warning sound when a vehicle is approaching at speed from behind, giving the driver time to react safely.
The new and more advanced Lane Change Assist helps drivers make safe and easier motorway lane changes. When the driver activates the turn signal, the system checks whether a vehicle is present in the blind spot before providing steering assistance. Lane Change Assist functions when the car’s Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Tracing Assist are activated.
The Pre-Collision System has been upgraded by expanding the scope of head-on collision detection and improving recognition of obstacles, bicycles and motorbikes. It works by alerting the driver with audio and visual warnings, and providing braking assistance. If the driver is unable to slow in time, the brakes automatically engage to prevent or mitigate a collision. In the event of an impact triggering an airbag, the new Secondary Collision Brake automatically brings the car to a gradual stop, in case the driver is unable to do so.
Manual parking has been made simpler thanks to the improved Panoramic View Monitor. This now includes a three-dimensional image to provide a more complete view of the area immediately around the vehicle.
Convenient over-the-air software updates enable Toyota Safety Sense to be kept up to date with latest functionalities and improvements.
An all-new digital experience
The all-new RAV4 marks the debut of a new, faster-operating and more compact Toyota multimedia system. It is part of an all-new digital ecosystem powered by Arene that provides a seamless user experience.
A higher quality of information can be displayed with clear visuals, Google Points of Interest, and real-time navigation details such as speed cameras and Low Emission Zones (LEZ) location alerts. The integration of the navigation map with the three-dimensional lane assistance in the driver’s 12.3-inch combimeter reduces potential distractions and makes directions easier to follow.
A new 12.9-inch home screen concept, designed with European customers in mind, gives the driver all key information in one view. Its intuitive, user-friendly design – with customisable shortcuts, a quick settings menu and data privacy features – makes personalising and navigating the in-car digital environment easier than ever. The digital cockpit experience is enhanced by a responsive and precise voice assistant that can handle navigation, media, in-car temperature, and vehicle control commands. It will receive regular over-the-air wireless software updates for continuous feature improvements.
The user-centric experience also goes beyond the cabin: the MyToyota app allows users to personalise services through subscription options, including faster remote services, an improved voice agent, drive recorder and music streaming.
