Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Lucas Moraes crowned W2RC Champion
Toyota Gazoo Racing W2RC (TGR W2RC) concluded the 2025 FIA World Rally-Raid Championship in commanding fashion on Friday (17 October) with Lucas Moraes sealing the drivers’ championship with a strong second place finish in the Rallye du Maroc. The result adds to the team’s success in the manufacturers’ championship which they claimed at the previous round, in Portugal in September
GR W2RC’s three crews and their GR Hilux EVO cars took on the final 134-mile timed section in the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains, navigating a route that combined demanding dunes and diverse terrain. The rally concluded with a Power Stage, a 20.5-mile sprint that marked the end of 918 miles of competitive action over the week.
Lucas Moraes and Armand Monleón began Stage 5 third on the road, and showed composure under pressure, entering the final stage of the season ahead of title rival Nasser Al-Attiyah. This ensured the title fight would go down to the wire. Delivering a strong and measured performance, they secured second place overall, clinching the drivers’ title for Moraes.
Moraes said: “It was a crazy, crazy finish to this rally but I just want to thank the whole team. It has been a dream to be a part of this team and to win the manufacturers’ and the drivers’ championship is something amazing – all the mechanics and engineers work so hard, so I am really happy to finish the season like this even though it went down to the wire.”
Seth Quintero and Andrew Short enjoyed one of their strongest days of the season and completed the rally with more than a minute in hand over their nearest rivals, setting the fastest times in both Stage 5 and the Power Stage.
Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings started the final day in fine form and, like their teammates, moved forward with very competitive times. Their promising form was unfortunately compromised by a technical issue shortly after the start of the Power Stage but they were able to make the finish and still claim third place in the drivers’ standings for Lategan.
TGR W2RC are celebrating a remarkable 2025 season, securing both the manufacturers’ and drivers’ titles. Attention now shifts to the 2026 campaign, with preparations already underway for the Dakar Rally, taking place from 3-17 January.
