Toyota expands EV charging ecosystem across the UK and Europe through strategic energy partnerships

27 November 2025
  • Toyota initiates links with leading energy providers to deliver smart solutions for battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric charging
  • Benefits for Toyota customers include access to renewable energy, lower bills and convenience
  • Toyota plans future expansion across Europe and Vehicle-to-Grid integration to support wider grid sustainability and carbon neutrality goals

Toyota Motor Europe (TME) is accelerating its electrification programme with the roll-out of a comprehensive EV charging ecosystem in several European markets, including the UK. The initiative is designed to offer Toyota and Lexus plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) drivers a seamless, intelligent and customer-centric charging experience – at home, at work and on the road

Toyota has initiated strategic partnerships with leading energy providers in the UK and across Europe, combining its mobility expertise with the energy sector’s capabilities in grid flexibility, renewable integration, and digital energy services to deliver a new customer value proposition.

The first tangible outcomes of these partnerships will be seen in 2026 with the launch of Demand Side Response (DSR) solutions in:

  • United Kingdom, in collaboration with British Gas
  • Germany, in collaboration with The Mobility House Energy

These DSR services will bring a range of direct benefits to customers, including:

  • Lower energy bills through smart charging that automatically shifts charging to off-peak hours when electricity is cheaper.
  • The convenience of intelligent scheduling and remote control via mobile apps.
  • Access to renewable energy, enabling vehicle charging when green energy is most available.
  • Incentives and rewards for participating in grid-balancing programmes.

Beyond individual benefits, these solutions also support wider grid sustainability by helping to balance electricity demand, reduce reliance on fossil-fuel-based peaking power plants, enable greater integration of intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar and reducing grid extension costs.

Looking ahead, TME plans to expand its energy collaborations to additional countries and introduce more advanced solutions, including Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) integration. This will allow EVs to not only draw energy from the grid but also return it when needed – turning vehicles into mobile energy assets and unlocking new value streams for customers.

Leon Van Der Merwe, VP Circular Economy and Energy Business at Toyota Motor Europe, said: “This initiative is a milestone in Toyota’s broader electrification strategy and supports its ambition to contribute to a more sustainable society. By enabling smart, flexible, and green charging, Toyota is helping to shape a future where mobility and energy work hand in hand for the benefit of customers, communities, and the planet.”
