Avensis Prescribed For Drugs Sales Team

18 January 2000

A fast-expanding pharmaceuticals company has started the year with a new fleet of cars for its sales force – and the arrangement has gone down well with the drivers.

Byk UK Ltd took delivery of a batch of 51 Toyota Avensis GLS five-doors on 5 January at its Ely, Cambridgeshire head office. Byk’s sales force is now using the cars all over the UK and Northern Ireland, in its campaign to promote Byk’s central product, a treatment for stomach ulcers.

The solus deal between Byk and Toyota Fleet follows the transfer, in-house, by the pharmaceutical company of what had formerly been a contract sales team, driving Mitsubishi Carismas.

“The drivers are delighted with their new cars,” says Byk UK’s Finance Director Sally Gale. “They have air conditioning now, which they didn’t have before, the interiors are nice and the drivers were pleased to find that instead of the ordinary colours they had expected, the cars all have metallic paint, which was a bonus.”

Sally was able to take advantage of a contract hire deal concluded by the recruitment agency that originally supplied the sales team. “They had already negotiated a good price for the Toyotas so I was able to follow up on that,” she says. And she described Toyota Fleet as helpful in making the necessary arrangements.

Byk UK was set up primarily to market the drug Protium, used to treat stomach ulcers and other serious gastric conditions, and already successful elsewhere in the world. The company is part of the long-established company Byk Gulden, the international pharmaceuticals division of the German Altana Group.

There could be prospects for further car orders: “Byk UK has really taken off and with our own clinical trials unit now established it is growing rapidly,” says Sally Gale.

“Toyota Fleet is keen to supply cars to young, expanding companies such as Byk UK, and it is very encouraging to know that the drivers are enthusiastic about their cars from the word go,” says Mark Hall, General Manager of Toyota Fleet.
