Bedfordshire Police Partnership Drive Safe With Corolla

8 January 1999

Toyota (GB) Ltd has supplied the Bedfordshire Police Partnership Trust with a Corolla 1.6GS, to be used as part of an ongoing road safety campaign.

In May 1997 the Bedfordshire Police Partnership was formally launched and is formed of well-known companies from a variety of businesses in Bedfordshire.

The aim of the Partnership is to support community based initiatives that improve the local quality of life including crime prevention, road safety and drugs awareness projects.

A pioneering driver-training scheme aimed at cutting the accident rate on Bedfordshire roads is now in progress. The ‘Filling the Gaps’ programme was originally aimed to help newly qualified drivers aged 17 to 24, but is now developed to cater for all ages including company car and van drivers.

The Toyota Corolla will enable drivers to go out on the road with a police driver who will assess their driving. The course includes a hazard recognition computer programme, first aid and what to do at the scene of an accident.

The Corolla is the ideal vehicle to promote safe driving, with its class-leading features that beat all existing safety standards. Every model has twin airbags and height-adjustable front seatbelts with electronic force-limiting pre-tensioners. The body structure is specially designed to protect the occupants and absorb energy in an emergency, with twin side impact beams in all doors.

For even greater security a remote controlled alarm with perimeter and microwave interior protection is fitted as standard on the GS.

“The success of the Bedfordshire Police Partnership Trust could not have taken place without the commitment from its founder members,” commented Brian Prickett, the Trust’s administrator. “We are very grateful to Toyota for supplying us with the Corolla. It will certainly help in driver awareness and hopefully help to reduce the rising casualty figures within the Bedfordshire area.”

The Corolla will be serviced by Fleet Contracts of Biggleswade.
