From Aygo to Aygo X: Toyota’s generations of small car success
Toyota shook up the small city car market when the original Aygo first hit the road back in 2005. Now into its third decade, Aygo – well established a top-selling success – has evolved into the new Aygo X, a model that’s very much of the moment but still faithful to the principle of giving people an affordable, urban-friendly car that’s efficient yet stylish.
Just in time to make Aygo X the perfect Christmas or New Year gift, Toyota has launched a new offer for private customers – details below.
The original Aygo was launched under the banner “urban mobility for a new generation” and that message remains true today. As a compact crossover, the new Aygo X has greater street presence and chunkier dimensions, but it’s still an agile drive and comes equipped with the safety and connectivity features prioritised by today’s customers.
Every new Aygo X features Toyota Safety Sense active safety and driver assistance features, including a Pre-Collision System with Emergency Steering Assist, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Trace Assist/Lane Departure Warning, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist. That’s in addition to six airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts, Hill-Start Assist Control and eCall emergency alert system.
The multimedia provisions demonstrate how far technology has progressed since the first generation Aygo’s simple radio/CD with auxiliary socket. Today, Aygo X comes with a Toyota Touch multimedia system (seven, eight or nine-inch display, according to model grade), Bluetooth, USB connection and smartphone integration using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. The Exclusive model adds a wireless charging tray, wireless Apple CarPlay connection and connection to cloud-based navigation. And if customers want even more, they can opt for a premium JBL audio system with a 300W amplifier.
Affordability has always been a critical consideration in the A-segment for small city cars. For all its more sophisticated design and equipment features, Aygo X stands as a cost-effective choice, particularly for customers who want a new car but are not in the market for more expensive electrified models. Day-to-day running costs benefit from low emissions (109 to 110 g/km for the manual version), strong fuel economy (56.5 to 58.85mpg, manual) and low insurance groups – from 5A. Toyota’s reputation for reliability is backed by a manufacturers’ warranty of up to 10 years*.
The powertrain delivering this efficient performance is a development of that which powered the original Aygo. The exceptionally light, one-litre three-cylinder engine won an unprecedented four successive International Engine of the Year awards in its class and helped Aygo win Top Gear’s coveted Car of the Year title – an honour it shared with the Bugatti Veyron supercar. As before, both manual and CVT automatic versions are available.
Aygo built a reputation as a trend-setter, with the range refreshed year after year with bold new colours, trims, options and accessories. It’s a theme carried forward by Aygo X, which has been launched with a striking range of spice-inspired colours that add to the car’s personality. The new Cardamom Green, Ginger Beige and Juniper Blue metallic and Chilli Red pearlescent are combined with black in a bi-tone paintwork finish that extends across the roof to the rear of the car and merges with side rockers and wheel arches.
The colour themes are picked up in the cabin, with matching trim highlights on the dashboard and centre console.
Toyota’s commitment to keeping the range fresh and new has already produced a new Air Edition version which comes as standard with a power-retracting, full-length canvas roof.
An A-segment car needs to be nimble to deal with life on urban streets and here Aygo X has a trump card in the form of its new GA-B platform – the foundation for a lower centre of gravity and high body rigidity – qualities that translate into rewardingly sharp chassis and steering response and handling stability. It’s a slightly larger car than its predecessor, but the crossover design gives the driver improved visibility and allows for more space in the cabin and an extra 60 litres in the boot. Fold the rear seats and there’s 829 litres of storage.
New customer offer
Toyota has this week launched a new Aygo X offer for retail customers. Models are available with a PCP agreement financed by Toyota Financial Services with 6.9 per cent APR Representative and a £1,500 Finance Deposit Allowance. Taking the Aygo X Edge manual model as an example, a 36-month agreement would see monthly payments of £233 (on-the-road price £17,675, customer deposit £2,000).
