ICE Spells The End For I-Spy
Headrest-mounted in-car entertainment system for Toyota Avensis
“Are we nearly there yet?” The cry from the back seat is all too familiar a chorus from children bored senseless by three-hour “I-spy” marathons on long car journeys. New Avensis drivers might now find their passengers asking for extra time on the move thanks to a versatile new in-car entertainment (ICE) system that opens up a great range of movie and gaming options.
The system has been designed to offer ease of use, flexibility, high-quality performance and is now available on new Avensis models.
It comprises two five-inch LCD screens set into the back of the front seat headrests. Each screen works independently of the other, so one can be set up for gaming while the other plays a DVD. Each screen has its own on/off button and controls for brightness, contrast and colour adjustment. The package also includes two sets of infrared stereo headphones, each with its own volume control.
For extra convenience, the DVD player is mounted inside the front glovebox, which means discs can be changed easily while on the move. The unit has been engineered to minimise any picture interference from bumps or vibration and is activated using a compact remote control handset. It is also compatible with CDs, VCDs, CDRs and MP3s.
The system is fitted with auxiliary input connectors that let you play back from a video camera or link up a home gaming console. For gaming systems a separate inverter cable needs to be purchased (this is not sold as a Toyota accessory).
The system works separately from the Avensis’s high quality audio equipment, so the driver and front seat passenger can enjoy their own CD or radio listening choice undisturbed.
All elements of the ICE system have been rigorously tested and meet all required safety standards. Installation in no way compromises the Avensis’s class-leading passenger safety provision.
The ICE system for new Avensis is a factory-fit option that needs to be specified at the time the car is ordered. The price, including installation and VAT, is £2,400. It is not possible to retro-fit the system after purchase of the vehicle.
