Marine & Industrial Transmissions Navigate Hybrid Route

19 February 2013

One of the UK’s prime suppliers of spares and service for marine gears and associated products for drive line and propulsion systems is adding Toyota Prius and seven-seat Toyota Prius+ full hybrid vehicles to their fleet.  The Prius are likely to lead to further hybrid vehicles and possibly the new Proace van later in the year.

Since 1974 Marine & Industrial Transmissions Ltd, (MIT) has provided expertise and quality products.  Working with well known suppliers, they have provided and maintained equipment to power products manufactured by the likes of Sunseeker, Irish Rail, Terex, Mustang Marine and the Ministry of Defence.

Based in Queensborough Kent, and Hensall Yorkshire, the MIT product portfolio is increasing and the application list includes concrete crushers, recycling equipment, locomotives, pleasure and commercial marine, including fishing boats & ferries.  In addition a service operation and spare parts department offers repairs, rebuilds or spares for most other makes of transmissions and marine gears. The engineering and machining workshop offer services from complete installation and fabrication for single component to volume component manufacture.

Peter Fenton MIT Financial Director commented: “The addition of the Prius vehicles for MIT is part of our overall programme of working towards environmental initiatives which we are doing through STEM(Steps to Environmental Management), and we have so far attained our Blue Certificate. The cars issue came about not just for environmental reasons but because of the cost efficiency such as savings on fuel and tyres, in addition there are corporation tax advantages that currently exist for low CO2 emitting vehicles. These lower CO2 emission cars also have the added benefit of lower personal tax”.

The Prius were supplied through the Business Centre Manager at Motorline Toyota in Ashford and will be used by the Sales Manager and Sales and Marketing Director of MIT on a Europe-wide basis.

Prius represents the reference point for hybrid technology and provides a strong proposition to companies wishing to reduce their emissions as well as their fleet running costs. Combined fuel economy is 72.4 mpg and combined emissions are from 89 g/km of CO2.  As a full hybrid, Prius has the ability to travel solely on battery power at lower speed which means it can achieve zero tail pipe emissions and zero fuel consumption.
