Towcar of the Year triumph for the Toyota bZ4X Touring
The new Toyota bZ4X Touring’s credentials as an electric SUV that’s ideal for outdoor lifestyles and adventure have been recognised with victory in the 2027 Towcar of the Year Awards, presented by the Caravan and Motorhome Club at a ceremony at the Royal Automobile Club on Friday.
The bZ4X Touring all-wheel drive model was named the winner in the hotly contested class for towing caravans between 1,500 and 1,600kg, outperforming a crowded field of rivals with petrol and diesel hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains.
Announcing the award, the judges commented: “…the bZ4X Touring is a very quick car – it completed the 0-60mph test in just 7.55 seconds when hitched, meaning it has performance comparable with far more expensive cars. Braking was impressively controlled, and the car handled very well – agile but stable.”
The Toyota underwent the awards’ comprehensive assessment programme with expert scrutiny of towing performance and practicality, including on-track testing at the UTAC Millbrook proving ground.
The bZ4X Touring joined Toyota’s growing range of battery electric vehicles this summer, adding an extra dimension to the established bZ4X SUV range. Its extended length increases the load compartment capacity by almost 50 per cent, while standard-fit roof rails can carry up to 80kg.
The all-wheel drive Excel model has a towing capacity of up to 1,500kg. Authentic AWD performance is supported by Toyota’s X-MODE system, which adjusts vehicle settings for different driving conditions, Grip Control and Downhill Assist Control.
The bZ4X Touring’s design reflects its outdoor lifestyle profile with the AWD model equipped with skid plates, matt black 20-inch wheels and wheel arch trims with a grained finish.
The car’s towing muscle is provided by an electric powertrain featuring a 74.7kWh battery and an additional 167kW rear motor. Total power output is 376bhp (380 DIN hp) with maximum torque of 268.6Nm. The official WLTP combined cycle driving range for the AWD model is up to 297 miles. With the benefit of battery pre-conditioning and temperature management, 10 to 80 per cent battery DC fast charging can be accomplished in 28 minutes (subject to local conditions).
