Toyota Gazoo Racing Seek More Success in Germany

13 August 2018

After an emphatic victory on home ground in Finland, Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team are looking to maintain their winning form this week in Germany, competing on the asphalt stages of Rallye Deutschland (16 to 19 August).

It will be the first time the team have competed on asphalt since Corsica, in April, presenting drivers Jari-Matti Latvala, Esapekka Lappi and Finland victor Ott Tänak with a chance to demonstrate the progress made with the Yaris WRC car.

Tänak also won last year’s German round of the championship and is keen to reassert his strength on the event. He said: “We will go to Germany with a high target after our win in Finland. I enjoy Germany every year. I like the challenge of having many different kind of roads. We will need to keep an eye on the weather because when I won the rally last year, the tyre choice made a big difference. The Yaris WRC has been performing pretty well on asphalt so I hope we will have everything we need to fight for the top. We are feeling confident.”

The terrain covered by Rallye Deutschland varies greatly, to the extent the event is almost three distinct rallies in one. The first full day on Friday covers a route on twisting roads through the vineyards overlooking the River Mosel, near Trier. Saturday’s action takes place on surfaces of greatly differing quality in the Baumholder military training ground, and Sunday’s stages are in the fast and narrow country lanes around the rally service park at the Botalsee lake in the Saarland. Tyre choice and car set up can be complicated by the often changeable weather.

Thursday’s Super Special stage start and Sunday’s finish will both take place in St Wendel. Friday begins with two stages through the vineyards before a spectator stage prior to return to the service park. The afternoon features a repeat of all three stages. Eight stages on Saturday include the Panzerplatte tracks at Baumholder and country lanes to the south. Sunday opens with a return to the vineyards for two runs through the Grafshacft, followed by the Bosenberg Power Stage.
