Toyota (GB) Shares the Love as Employees Vote It One of Britain’s Best Companies to Work For

11 March 2019

Hundreds of staff at Toyota (GB) PLC joined in celebrations at the company’s Surrey headquarters on Friday to mark the business’s high ranking in the Sunday Times annual 100 Best Companies to Work For list.

The national sales and marketing operation for the Toyota and Lexus vehicle brands features as one of the country’s top employers for a fifth consecutive year, claiming 22nd place among medium-size businesses.

True to the core Toyota principle of kaizen – constant improvement – the company has focused on building ever-better engagement with its employees and creating a more rewarding working environment, with greater flexibility and initiatives to generate and apply innovation.

Notably Toyota was again commended for its “extraordinary levels” of engagement and was ranked second overall for employees being “proud to work for” the company with a 91 per cent positive score.

Moreover, 84 per cent of Toyota staff professed to “love their job,” the sixth highest score in the category.

In its report on Toyota, Best Companies highlighted the Smarter Working flexible working programme, helping parents, carers and managers better understand the options open to them. It also noted the positive response to the Innovate and Accelerate project that involves everyone in the business in sparking great new ideas and putting them into practice.

Charitable work is another important element in Toyota’s success, including the grants provided to good causes by the Toyota Fund for a Better Tomorrow and opportunities for employees to give practical help through organised volunteering during working hours, with no loss of earnings. Ninety-eight percent agreed that “my organisation encourages charitable activities.”

Toyota supports personal wellbeing as well, with initiatives to support physical, emotional and financial health.

Paul Van der Burgh, Toyota GB President and Managing Director, said: “We know that we can succeed as a business by building a working environment where people feel they are supported, are listened to and are given opportunities to raise their skills and improve their job prospects. We are proud that some of the game-changing initiatives we have introduced in the past few years have succeeded in strengthening our engagement with our people, success that is reflected in this excellent result in the Best Companies to Work For list.”

To celebrate the success, a lunch was held for all staff in the atrium at the company’s HQ near Epsom. A casual dress code and an early finish to the working day were applied.
