Toyota marks production of six millionth engine at its Deeside plant

• First Minister of Wales Rhun ap Iorwerth visits Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK Deeside as the plant marks production of the facility’s six millionth engine 

• North Wales facility began operations in 1992, supplying engines to Toyota production centres in the UK, Europe and worldwide 

• Deeside was the first site outside Japan to manufacture Toyota hybrid engines 

• Today’s operation is focused on the goal of carbon-neutral production, using electricity from renewable sources and sending zero waste to landfill 

Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK (TMUK) has reached the milestone achievement of six million engines produced by its Deeside plant in North Wales. To mark the occasion, the First Minister for Wales, Rhun ap Iorwerth visited the facility yesterday and paid tribute to its achievements and its workforce. 

He said: “As a new government, we want a Welsh economy that is fit for the future. Companies like Toyota, who have been part of the fabric of their community for decades, while continuing to be at the cutting edge of new technologies, are important to the long-term health of our economy. It was fantastic to meet some of the staff at the beginning of their careers at Toyota and some of those that have worked here since the company first arrived on Deeside. To see the six millionth engine produced was a real privilege and a remarkable milestone in the history of Toyota in Wales, which I hope will continue for years to come.” 

Richard Finchett, TMUK Deputy Managing Director, said: “Reaching six million engines is a testament to the commitment, expertise and teamwork of everyone who has contributed to the Deeside plant over the past 34 years. But it is more than just a number, it is six million examples of the quality, care and pride that go into every engine built here.” 

Deeside came on stream in 1992 with the establishment of TMUK as Toyota’s first direct manufacturing business in Europe, alongside a car production centre at Burnaston in Derbyshire. Throughout its history, it has succeeded by embracing the principles of the Toyota Production System, combining lean manufacturing with a focus on safety, quality, continuous improvement and respect for people. 

In 2011, TMUK Deeside became the first Toyota production site outside Japan to build hybrid systems. Today it manufactures advanced units that power some of Toyota’s most popular models, including Corolla and C-HR. 

TMUK Deeside has also been at the forefront of Toyota’s global efforts to achieve carbon neutrality in its business operations. As one of the company’s most sustainable plants globally, it has identified and implemented methods for reducing the use of natural resources and generating renewable energy on-site. Today, 100 per cent of its electricity is derived from renewables and zero waste is sent to landfill, maintaining the business’s progress towards carbon-neutral production. 

Located on a 115-acre site, TMUK Deeside employs around 580 people and supports many more jobs in the region. In 2025, it delivered almost a quarter of a million (244,078) engines for vehicles assembled in the UK, Turkey and South Africa.
