Toyota Recalls Yaris And Yaris Verso

3 October 2002

Toyota is recalling 43,600 Yaris and Yaris Verso vehicles in the UK for a possible brake line fault in temperatures below minus 20 degrees Centigrade. This is part of a worldwide campaign affecting 400,000 vehicles. Although this possible fault will not affect cars in the UK unless the ice age returns next month, Toyota (GB) PLC are issuing an official recall to modify vehicles within a certain chassis number range.

This recall affects all Yaris (except T Sport) and Yaris Verso built between October 2000 and early March 2002. The rectification is to replace both rear brake drum lines for a differently routed type that has been in series production since March 2002.

This brake line fault became apparent in Finland where Yaris Verso is widely used by the Postal Service. An accumulation of ice from hard packed snow in the tyre well and around the rear brake drum assembly was found to cause the brake pipe to eventually leak fluid. Although brake efficiency is lowered the brakes remain effective as Yaris has a dual circuit brake system and a low fluid level warning light to warn the driver.

Whilst it is highly unlikely that any vehicles in the UK will be subjected to these Scandinavian type conditions, Toyota treats the safety of its customers with the utmost importance and therefore is recommending that this repair is made to all applicable vehicles.

Owners will be contacted in writing by Toyota shortly to schedule an appointment. The modification by a dealer takes just over an hour to complete and every owner will receive £10 petrol, a car wash and vacuum and a complimentary gift.
