Toyota Yaris Top Prize in £100,000 Muscular Dystrophy National Prize Draw

17 December 1999

A brand new Toyota Yaris, recently acclaimed European Car of the Year for 2000, was presented as top prize in a national fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign on Tuesday 14 December. The award of the Yaris prize car funded and supplied by Kent based dealership McCarthy Toyota, marks the end of a massive seven-month national campaign to raise funds and give support to families and individuals living with neuromuscular conditions.

The winner, from over 200,000 entries, 24-year-old Steven Barber from Newcastle upon Tyne, received his prize Yaris on Tuesday 14 December at the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign offices. The charity’s Executive Director Tony Lee and McCarthy Toyota Fleet Sales Specialist Giles Bell attended the handover event to present the vehicle to an “utterly delighted” Steven.

The fundraiser is one of the most important elements of the charity’s community fundraising programme accounting for some 20% of the region’s annual fundraising income.

The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign was formed to raise funds for research into neuromuscular conditions. The service has recently expanded and now offers support to families and individuals living with neuromuscular conditions. Two-thirds of all income is spent in research into the condition and the other third on support and information.

Schemes like the Toyota Motability Programme allow people in receipt of Higher Rate Disability Living Allowance to acquire a new Toyota for less than you might think.

Toyota Motability Specialists, such as McCarthy Toyota in Kent, advise disabled people on the most suitable vehicle models and types of adaptations they may require to put them in the driving seat and enjoy independent travel. Toyota promotes and supports this trouble-free service, which is financed through Motability Finance Limited.
