The road to carbon neutrality
Toyota is on course to achieve carbon neutrality in Europe by 2040 at the latest. The company gave an update on its progress in both manufacturing and new product plans at its recent Kenshiki media forum. Read more here.
Towards a new Toyota C-HR
Toyota has given a first glimpse of its thinking for a new Toyota C-HR with the unveiling of the Toyota C-HR prologue, a concept created at its European design centre – the same creative hub that produced the current model. Looking ahead to a production version, there’s the prospect of an even bolder design and the option of both hybrid electric and plug-in hybrid electric powertrains. Read more here.
All-electric SUV concept
Toyota’s Kenshiki media forum presented the European debut of the bZ Compact SUV Concept, looking ahead to a potential future addition to the bZ sub-brand of all-electric vehicles. Another product penned by ED2, Toyota’s European design centre, it is a zero emission model that makes use of low-impact, sustainable materials. Read more here.
Hydrogen highlights
UK Government funding has been secured for a project to develop a hydrogen fuel cell version of the Toyota Hilux. The programme is being led by Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK (TMUK) at its Burnaston car plant and will look at how hydrogen could be a viable zero emission proposition for commercial vehicles. Meanwhile, Toyota is advancing its research into the feasibility of a hydrogen combustion engine, having used Japan’s Super Taikyu racing series as a development test bed during 2021. The company is now trialling a prototype road car that uses hydrogen as fuel in a turbocharged engine. Read more here.
Demonstrating its commitment to multiple technologies to achieve carbon neutrality, Toyota and Rookie Racing are entering a hydrogen GR Corolla H2 and GR86 CNF (carbon neutral fuel) in a 25-hour endurance race in Thailand this weekend. Read more here.
Dakar attack
Toyota Gazoo Racing have lined up a three-car assault on the 2023 Dakar Rally, which gets under way on 31 December. Nasser Al-Attiyah and co-driver Mathieu Baumel will lead the trio of GR DKR Hilux T1+, seeking to repeat their 2022 victory and launch defence of their FIA World Rally Raid Championship title.
