Toyota sales surge to new record in 2023
Toyota enjoyed a second successive year of record-breaking new vehicle sales in 2023.
End-of-year results show group sales – Toyota and Lexus passenger cars and light commercial vehicles combined – reached a new high of 145,142 units, securing a 6.47 per cent market share.
Toyota passenger cars commanded a new record share of the retail market, at 7.19 per cent with 62,020 sales, while business and fleet car sales totalled 47,395 units, giving the brand 4.56 per cent of the market.
The expanding Toyota Professional range delivered the company’s best year yet for light commercial vehicle sales in both retail and fleet markets, with a total of 19,764 units. Sales of the Hilux pick-up rose by 50 per cent year-on-year, while the Proace family of medium and compact vans achieved 60 per cent sales growth on 2022’s figures.
Among Toyota’s passenger cars, Yaris Cross continued to excel, with sales volumes up by one third on 2022. The launch of the compact SUV has not diminished the popularity of the Yaris Hybrid hatchback, which enjoyed its second highest annual total with more than 23,800 sales and 10.8 per cent of its market segment. Aygo X is the clear leader in the city car segment, with 30.4 per cent of sales in 2023.
Mark Roden, Toyota (GB) Operations Director, said: “The record results delivered in 2022 and 2023 are a great foundation for further growth across all areas of our business – retail and fleet, passenger cars and light commercials. We face important new challenges as the market adapts to the timetable for full electrification, but we are confident that our new product programme and our technical leadership and our reputation for consistent quality, durability and reliability will be key further success.”
