Toyota launches next generation new mobility e-Palette
Toyota has launched Japanese sales of a new generation e-Palette, a battery electric vehicle that can adapted for a wide range of mobility services.
The e-Palette has a spacious interior and large windows that create a sense of openness. Its role is not just to be a means of transport but to deliver a variety of mobility services with a single vehicle, such as a mobile store or a service space. Its multi-use applications can provide new mobility experiences, inspired by customer ideas.
Toyota will introduce the e-Palette at the Toyota arena Tokyo and surrounding areas, and Toyota Woven City, where it will be used for a range of initiatives, including local transportation and mobile stores. In addition, Toyota will carry out automated driving demonstrations, working together with dealerships, local authorities and technical partners, with the aim of the vehicle being equipped with Level 4 automated driving systems during the 2027 financial year.
Toyota will expand the possibilities of mobility, aiming to build a society where everyone has the freedom to move and where mobility has the power to move people emotionally as well as physically.
Multi-use vehicle applications
Equipping the e-Palette with a variety of devices will allow it serve different purposes throughout the day. For example, it can be used as a shuttle bus in the morning and evening, while operating a store during the day while being recharged.
The spacious interior allows for customisation for more diverse applications. For example, installing communications or audio equipment can turn into an entertainment vehicle where passengers on the move can watch sports and enjoy immersive sightseeing experience.
Accessible design
The low floor and wide sliding doors allow for quick boarding and exit, while an extending electric ramp means wheelchair users can enter and exit independently to and from 15cm high pavements. Optional equipment such as a one-touch wheelchair fastening device is also available.
Automated driving
The e-Palette can support an automated driving system conforming to Level 2 specifications. Toyota will continue to implement improved functions with the aim of providing Level 4 automated driving systems during the 2027 fiscal year.
It can be equipped with systems developed by a number of companies (ADK Automated Driving Kit, automated driving control hardware and software, and sensors such as cameras and LiDAR,) compatible through standardised connections with Toyota’s vehicle control interface (VCI). Redundant systems are installed to ensure robust, reliable performance.
This method of integration contributes to safe and secure driving, supporting Toyota’s vision for automated driving. Seamless collaboration with operations management systems also ensures smooth automated driving operation.
Advanced equipment
The vehicle uses a steer-by-wire system, reducing the level of input required from the driver and so reducing the driving burden. The steering wheel has a unique shape that creates an advanced look for the driver’s cockpit.
Digital signage inside and out can display information to match the vehicle’s usage. The signage software can be edited by customers so they can share information when required.
In addition to safe exit assistance, the cabin has a system that monitors the areas around the doors for safe operation.
Charging and power supply
The e-Palette is compatible with both standard and rapid battery charging. It can also serve as a power source when stationary, for example in emergency situations. Standard charging time is about 12 hours; a rapid charge can be accomplished in about 40 minutes.
