Toyota Mobility Foundation launches European Hydrogen Regions Initiative
- New initiative to accelerate pathways to a low-carbon energy future
- Commitment to scalable, real-world solutions that can deliver climate, economic and societal impact
- Focus on integrated hydrogen ecosystems, connecting production, distribution and mobility use
- Open call is now live for regional partners, supported by Spilett GmbH
Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF) has launched a new initiative in its commitment to supporting the development of sustainable, low-carbon and inclusive mobility and energy ecosystems across Europe.
The foundation will provide targeted support to promising European regions that have already begun developing hydrogen ecosystems but are facing sustainability challenges. The focus is on those with strong potential to succeed once these barriers can be overcome, helping them become self-sustaining with no requirement for ongoing support.
Priority will be given to projects( in up to five European regions) that demonstrate significant local impact and have strong potential for replication in other regions, so can help accelerate the development of resilient and scalable hydrogen ecosystems across Europe.
The initiative will see close collaboration between regional and local authorities, industry stakeholders, mobility operators, and civil and academic groups and organisations. The selected regions will receive structured assessment, technical support and guidance on developing an ecosystem, helping to build viable and integrated hydrogen value chains.
TMF has appointed Spilett GmbH to support implementation of the project, building on the success of their previous collaboration on hydrogen ecosystem development. This included tools such as H2Scout which enable data-driven planning and optimisation of hydrogen value chains.
Spillet GmbH will support TMF by: –
- Identifying and assessing candidate regions
- Supporting a transparent and structured selection process
- Contributing to the design of integrated hydrogen ecosystems
- Engaging regional stakeholders and strengthening connections within the European hydrogen ecosystem
The call for applications is now open for regions, cities and stakeholders to signal their interest in taking part in the first phase. Details can be found at https://www.h2regions.eu/TMF; applications close on 31 July 2026.
