Toyota Takes Top Spot at MPG Marathon

The Toyota Aygo has achieved the overall top spot at the 2006 AA/ALD Automotive MPG Marathon on 4 and 5 October. Driving an Aygo 1.4 D-4D, James Sutherland and Richard Hill from Peak Performance obtained an overall fuel economy of 83.44mpg, more than20 per cent better than the official combined figure of 68.9mpg.

The Toyota Avensis 2.2 D-4D also won the category for best percentage improvement over the official combined figure, achieving 68.2mpg. This worked out to be a 42 per cent improvement over the quoted combined cycle of 47.9mpg. The Avensis was driven by Doug Powell from Hants County Council and Trevor Holland a freelance journalist.

The MPG Marathon, run by Stag Publications, involved completing 360 miles from Bristol to Newquay over different types of road. The results were judged on the consumption achieved along with the percentage improvement obtained in relation to the official consumption figure for each car.

Tim Copland General Manager Toyota Fleet commented, “This is the second time this year the Toyota Aygo has triumphed at an MPG event. The results also highlight the efficiency improvements made to Avensis diesel models over the last year. Now available with a choice of three power outputs offering greatly improved consumption and lower CO2 Toyota continues to strengthen its diesel position in the fleet market.”

Ross Durkin, Managing Editor of Fleet World magazine added, “This is a great result both for Toyota and for the two drivers. Their achievement clearly demonstrates that skilful drivers use less fuel. Whether you are a member of the public with one car – or a fleet manager with 500 – cutting your annual fuel bill by this sort of margin must be an attractive proposition.”
