Tiny Toyota Takes Top Spot at MPG Marathon for Second Year

The Toyota Aygo successfully defended its crown as the most economical car on the roads at the 2007 AA/ALD Automotive MPG Marathon on 3 and 4 October.

Driving an Aygo 1.0 litre, James Sutherland and Richard Hill from Peak Performance – the same pairing who won last year – finished ahead of every other car, even economy specials. Using just 19.12 litres of petrol they achieved an overall consumption figure of 78.39 mpg, an improvement of nearly 28 per cent over the official combined figure. Three of the top four cars in the event were regular production Toyota Aygos, proving its frugal behaviour is not solely due to technical tricks or the specialist driving techniques of the drivers – everybody can get great fuel economy from an Aygo.

The MPG Marathon, run by Fleet World magazine, involved completing 330 miles from Basingstoke to Torquay over different types of road. The results were judged on the consumption achieved, along with the percentage improvement obtained, in relation to the official consumption figure for each car.

Tim Copland General Manager Toyota Fleet commented, “This successful defence of the title proves that Aygo is the car to pick if you want all the features and safety of a full size car but fuel economy even light-weight specials cannot match.”

Ross Durkin, Publisher of Fleet World magazine added, “This is a great result both for Toyota and for the two drivers on their second consecutive win. The Marathon has proved, if proof was needed, that skilled driving techniques work and can make a dramatic impact upon miles per gallon.”
