Gill Pratt on the war on carbon

Dr Gill Pratt, Toyota’s Chief Scientist, has used his new blog to give a very personal perspective on Toyota’s strategy for achieving carbon neutrality. Pratt, who also heads up Toyota Research Institute (TRI), explains the company’s multi-technology approach to electrification and why he doesn’t believe an exclusive focus on battery electric vehicles will deliver the right results. He gives that opinion while also declaring his love of electric cars – including the Tesla X that’s in his personal garage. Read more here.

Toyota investment in battery technology

Toyota shone the spotlight on its development programme for new battery technologies for electrified vehicles in a recent media forum in Japan. It also detailed its approach to reducing costs through integrated development of batteries and vehicles and how its current hybrid electric models are using more powerful batteries to speed up carbon reduction. JAMA press conference with Akio Toyoda

Toyota President Akio Toyoda recently spoke at a press conference at the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), in which he addressed carbon neutrality issues, declaring “carbon is our enemy, not internal combustion engines” and reflected on his company’s learnings from the Tokyo Paralympics. Yaris Cross: here and now

The all-new Yaris Cross joined Toyota’s line-up this summer, giving the company the market’s largest range of hybrid electric SUVs. Customers now have four to choose from: Yaris Cross, Toyota C-HR, RAV4 and the seven-seat Highlander, plus the new RAV4 plug-in hybrid. Based on the new Yaris hatchback – the current European Car of the Year – Yaris Cross combines the best of Toyota’s expertise in small car design and SUV engineering. Read more here. Kinto gets Derby moving

Kinto, Toyota’s new mobility brand, has launched a new app-based service to help people plan and make integrated journeys, saving time, reducing emissions and helping planners draw up more effective transport strategies. DerbyGo (by Kinto) is the UK’s largest and most ambitious Mobility as a Service (MaaS) scheme yet. Read more here.

Adventure time ahead

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid line-up is taking another direction with the announcement of a new Adventure grade model that will be introduced in 2022. Fully embracing a “go anywhere” spirit, the new model will come with more rugged exterior styling and intelligent all-wheel drive as standard. Read more here.

Hotter Hilux set for Dakar ‘22

Toyota Gazoo Racing are lining up a more powerful Hilux for their 2022 Dakar Rally campaign. A new Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+ will make its racing debut as part of the four-car assault on the world’s toughest cross-country rally in January, powered by a 3.5-litre twin-turbo engine developed from the unit featured in the new Land Cruiser 300. Relax – an award-winning approach

Toyota’s new Relax warranty programme, giving customers cost-free cover for up to 10 years for their vehicle, proved a decisive factor in Parkers New Car Awards bestowed on the Proace Electric (Best Electric Van) and Proace City (Best Small Van for the second year running). The honours also brought more success for the remarkable GR Yaris as “Best Car for Thrill Seekers.” Read more here.

Designs on the future

As well as picking up an award, Proace City has extended its appeal with a new top-of-the-range Design grade, offering alloys, satellite navigation and Toyota Safety Sense as standard. There is also the prospect of a new, more powerful engine and automatic transmission in the year ahead. Read more here.

The Toyota Corolla continues to set the pace as the world’s best-selling car name-plate, with global sales passing 50 million since the original saloon debuted in 1966. Read more here.

Toyota’s Woven Planet Holdings subsidiary continues to develop, most recently acquiring the vehicle operating system developer Renovo Motors. This will provide more resources for world-class technology and safer mobility. Read more here.
